Follow-up thoughts on why I'm liking the Tarainsert so much:

    • Being both hook-and-loop and PALS compatible means there are a ton of different ways you can organize this, and just as quickly change it up.

    • Although it's designed for the Tara, it will work inside any of their packs, since it just attaches at the top with a Grimloc. So you can set it up the way you want, and then easily move it from one pack to another while maintaining the same organizational setup.

Ive been eyeing the wind cheater. After seeing all of the longhouse videos Ive started reorganizing my gear and especially my cold weather gear. The windcheater over a regular shirt should keep me warm while backpacking and then adding layers underneath once we stop seems like a super smart way to deal with the cold. Never really gave wind a thought for heat loss.

My goal this year is to do an overnighter with just a Tara and a Kit Bag. ;)

For sure. Since temps here, even in the middle of the summer, can be 40º or less at night at elevation, I think I'd be restricted to a summer trip with that setup. But I think it's very do-able. I have a Kifaru Pod that I can strap to the bottom of the Tara that will easily accommodate my down quilt and a puffy jacket. Sleeping pad and tarp go inside, along with a few other layers and all the food I need. Kit bag is for snacks and other stuff I want access to throughout the day. I think it's very do-able.

And these days, I really love having as light of a setup as possible. I don't miss the days of being bent over under a heavy pack and having a sore back when I get to camp. Makes it to easier to cover more miles, too. I have nothing left to prove to anyone, least of all myself. :D

There is always room for a stuff sack attached to the bottom or a sleeping pad across the compression straps. SOOO many ways to use the gear that its silly not to buy it.

I'll join you both as well. May start a bit earlier than summer though. It gets hella hot here, and I need a bigger bag just for water. lol

March or April easily. Even May. If we wanted to be really messed up to the folks in the colder regions we could do it right now. Bahahaha!

Bahahaha! Nah let's wait. I'd like to see Tara's loaded out (extra panels and what not) but maybe no hobo cosplay lol. We'll wait till warmer months, hopefully at that point the challenge will have more folks taking part.

I had a feeling we could talk you into it. :D

I can't even get up the hillside behind my house without skis right now, much less farther into the backcountry, so I'm going to have to wait a few months to pull off a trip if I'm being that minimal with gear. Maybe May. But don't let me stop you from going first!

Just an FYI- the USGI molle II waist pack mounts directly to the Tara compression straps without modification. You can pick them up for ~$15-20. They can also be worn alone as a waist/fanny pack, or you can run it strapped to the bottom of the Tara as a waist belt. Great add on, bombproof construction, and not much money. Adds a lot of space.

Sounds like a plan! I can wait till May. Actually may be easier for me as far as the sleeping out goes. (Day will be hot though) May do a trial run before that though. But I'm in regardless. Great idea!

I have the Ashton house insert in my Umlindi and love it for all the same reasons...it's also nice bc I can slide my laptop down behind it and it has some protection from the frame sheet and the insert..works great and the possibilities are endless...

As much as I love my umlindi, this insert set up on a panel loading pack would be absolutely killer!!
