The other thing to consider on a farm is line of sight. I have 120 acres, but due to woods and hills thereby are only a handful of places where I can see 500 yards out (and not hit a neighbor).

When you come here I can get us setup on that 530yd spot.

^yep. In linear distance I should be able to make shots around 360yds at my house. The incline in the middle of my property has other plans though.

No neighbors that would be in danger there. I spend a lot of time there and have taken a ton of deer off it. I’ve shot my AR 300yds there without issue.

It should be ready and able by then. I’m hoping to see it grouping by next weekend.

I am sometimes lucky, sometimes not. It is always best to have a good spotter on a good scope with Mil dots. My son and I were shooting at 800 yes last year at Fossil Point in Texas. We plan to visit a range that has 1200 yards this year.

I could shoot out to nearly 2000yds on one of the places I hunt.....that was the furthest we could find a line through the trees not the boundaries of the place...I of course can't hit anything that far away.... ;)

    My 1970s made SSG...

Right group is factory Winchester 175gn "Match" loads....left is my own handloaded 165gn load.

That is what I have on my KAC 5.56 precision rifle. Pretty nice glass, though the upper end Vortex is certainly more on the special side.

For long distance shooters, there is some new stuff coming out at the NRA show.

According to John Noveske, yes, it is a myth. I'm not aware of anyone who knew more about barrels than John.

    ....absolutely..... ;) ;) ;) :D

I really was not out to shoot the SSG much that day, I had worked up a couple of loads I wanted to try in my Sako .308 and as we were away and on a place we have a solid construction bench and such I threw the SSG in to see how it went as I had just finished up replacing the optics and bottom Steyr plastics with metal with the AI magazine adaptor. I was also shooting the .375 for giggles. When I got to the Steyr (my mate and Godson were also toying with rifles) I had Federal GMM and the Winchester Match loads to try, I have been trying to get some of the Outback Ammunition 168gn loads to try but they are still hard to source just now. I have never had great results in this rifle with the GMM but thought I would see with the new optics and rigidity. No suprise to me the GMM still shot like crap (1and a little MOA), the Winchester 175gn was better. But not much.

I packed the SSG up for the day and played with the rest. I was pondering it and made time to get to the range area early the next morning (the wind always comes up by mid morning at that time of year). Shot the GMM and still no good, shot the Winchester group you see above and then for giggles I threw in some of the loads I had with me for the Sako...and that group along with two more like it were the result. At 2000yds (errrrr 100 ;) ) of course.....

As far as barrel break in:

Yep. Myth. Shoot the damn thing. I don’t like removing the copper at any point with a rifle. Much less a precision rifle. Bore snake and WD do well for me. Maybe some CLP. I shoot a lot. People overcomplicate these things.

Rifle will be here Tuesday. I’m hoping to have scope rings in Monday or Tuesday. I’m going to have my buddy who owns a LGS here mount it for me. Hopefully he knows what he’s doing.

About to order some rings and the Blackhawk “71RA00BK“ so I can mount an Atlas up front to the swivel sling.

How does one know the bore snake is as good as they say unless you try? No one will tell.

I never used a bore snake... I'm old school, like to use a fresh patch every time. :D
