Started my first attempt at making a kuksa. Old pecan wood and my first attempt at really roughing stuff out with an axe. In this case, a SOG tomahawk (Cant wait for that new Esee hand axe though). Called it quits for today once i started carving the actual bowl. Ill update when done.
started dehydrating some canned soup (it was on sale for $3) for this weekends hike. the silicone mat had too large of holes in it, so i just used some foil (zero loss of yummies). spiced it up with LOTS of black pepper, cumin and corainder, and hot pepper sauce (thanks @Benson X ). second tray and then the dehydrator unit op top. hopefully this will done Sat AM, if not no biggie, i'll use it on Sun
2 hours in: lots of moisture loss already.....I sped it along by stirring the stew every 1/2 hour. 100% moisture loss this morning.....So thats what you get for $3. A 2 LB can of water with some flavor bits..... I should have added a can of baked beans... going to add some pasta or Gnnochi to the mix to plump it out a bit.
A wonderful lady asked me to make a rack to hang her ceramic collectible measuring spoons. The holes in the spoons are absolutely tiny, but thankfully the spoons don't get used often. The only thing that'd work for the pegs was finishing nails, if you can imagine that! Still some work to be done on the thing, but she's coming out pretty nice.
made a huge batch of spicy rice and beans for the dehydrator. Got garlic, onions, Mexican chili powder, salt, pepper, coriander and cumin and some hot sauce in the mix. Black beans and kidney beans, and a mix of basmati, white, brown and jasmine rice. about 10 LARGE portions, cost a grand total of $5 CDN. (same meal, from Mountain House, is about $9 CDN for a SINGLE portion. ) used the wok as it was very easy to thoroughly mix all the ingredients got two full trays, left an empty tray with the liner (to catch any rice that falls thru the grates) on the bottom.
Since i dont have confidence in the Mora plastic sheaths, i made a wooden scabbard for my carving knife. 3/4" oak molding was cut into two equal sized blocks. The blade shape was drawn, and hollowed out on one side, leaving the blade to sit flush in one of the blocks. A lil sanding and glue up, then a shaping session. BLO then Tung Oil Finish. This will work....for now, although i am debating char-coloring some of it.
all bagged up, 4 double portions of mixed rice, black beans ,kidney beans, spices, and mixed veggies.
yep...heat up water to boiling, pour over the dried food, let soak, and then add more water and let heat up/soak by the fire. similar to this: https://www.rei.com/product/604786/mountain-house-mexican-style-rice-and-chicken-3-servings BUT NO ARTIFICIAL INGREDIENTS - just FOOD super light food when dried.....
Made a lil sheath for my Cabela's multitool. Recycled leather boots, wet molded, glued, then stitched. Added a belt loop thingamajig to the back, and a front flap closure. True tp my form, i messed up trimming an edge, but salavged my work. Edges were "burnished" with saliva and boot conditioner (i dont like that edge kote stuff).
Made yet another sheath out of the same old boot leather, this time for my mora 120 (since that plastic sucks). I didnt care for the wooden scabbard that i previously showcased, so decided to make a "Scandinavian" style sheath. I trimmed the plastic mora sheath down to only the part that i needed (the tapered part of the plastic sheath), laid out my leather, and made this. The collar was the same piece of leather, just folded over. I pierced 3 holes on each side of the collar to accommodate my hanger strap, madw of deer leather. Saddle stitched up the back (no glue) and burnished the edges with leather conditioner. Pictured of my 5.11 belt with my Cabela's multitool (previously posted). Thanks for looking!
Made a crappy sheath to fit a garberg and an esee pouch, no fancy tools here just an esee 4 and a file to cut and shape the leather i re used the dangler from another crappy sheath i made
