I had graphic to put on an ESEE 6 and instead of doing a laser etch (after which I would have used the Radio Shack etchant solution) they recommended a process that used a computer controlled engraver to cut the graphic into the steel. I didn't need to use the solution when I got it back. I also don't think that it would be too hard to put a coating of paint or some such stuff on the blade prior to doing a laser etch and then the use of the solution.
You can etch a normal ESEE as the powder coat protects the metal around the logo. You can't etch the Libertariat as there's no real coating on that blade, just a finish. What you can do it either order a logo/phrase or print one yourself and etch it. I use a cheap, old school battery charger. I put one lead on the blade and in the other I use some type of cotton wad dipped in a salt and water solution (regular salt and tap water). Make sure to tape around what you're etching or this will act just like the PCB etchant does and you'll etch part of your knife you didn't intend to. I've also used a 9 volt battery with success. I have cut stuff out of electrical tape and that works great. Except I'm not an artist so I order mine. I'm looking at getting a vinyl printer that I can utilize and would likely save money in the long run.
The libertariat is officially pimped out. What a difference this made. The handle was just too slim, and too slick. I'm going to find something to epoxy it so it's a permanent fix.
Thanks! I need a new sheath, since the strap will no longer fit around the handle. But I'm happy it finally fits my hand right. Now I'll be able to give it the proper testing it deserves.
If your'e going to put all that effort in it and you need a new sheath anyway, I'd get @Allen Morrison to make you up a kydex one to your own specs.
In the spirit of diy, I'm going to try to whip something up myself. The stock sheath works quite well without the strap. The wrap gives it enough friction to stay pretty firmly in place. I think I'm going to dye it a darker brown. Maybe even mold it with wax like @Bushman5.
I don't know if I really NEED to add one of these to my esee knife drawer. There is already a bunch of blades in there that have only seen use a handful of times as it is. Maybe I want two though. I am liking the blade thickness. Actually a useful and not ultra flexable. Are these serial numbered like the other blades?
It’s a great tool. The combination of this length, thickness and a decently long handle is the definition “winning”
