I have a gourd of similar size that I use for foraging. Yours looks fantastic though!

When I was 10 I was boating with my grandparents and I fell off and my arm was caught in the propeller. It shattered the bones and tore out all the nerves and arteries. It was attached by skin on the back but by time we got medical help it disconnected fully. They put it back on but I have limited use and struggle holding or gripping things and the nerve pain is daily fun. Needless to say after flatlining from blood loss survival skills peaked my interest. Lol

    Speaking as a FAN:
I had always focused on the Survival and shooting side of RAT classes as a customer....I was always very pleased with the instruction and the quality of people involved.

    AS an EMPLOYEE:
I got to experience some of the OTHER classes and have really come to respect and admire the bushcraft Side of things...as previously stated I am an admitted gear-ho....but taking those classes has caused me to challenge myself a bit more and leave gear at home that I would normally bring, forcing myself to improve my skills and expand my skillset...

I have an even greater appreciation and respect for our instructor cadre and the work they put into these classes.

fortunately I was blessed with the ability to suffer so that is a good thing too...I hate heights and confined spaces but they've even gotten me on ropes...and in some semi confined space...baby steps.

to this day that was ALMOST some of my best footage ever....I wish I could go back to that moment with better equipment...You guys were RAW...beaten and super focused just due to hunger and fatigue.....focused on your task but I honestly think I could have asked you anything and you would have answered it....still one of my favorite moments in my tenure here at ESEE.

That and the "Why do you Train?" Video...that video doesn't get the views it should....it came at the end of a very difficult field survival class....I love the rawness of the answers and you can see the fatigue in their eyes..

It’s my favorite but I think it’s one of those “you had to be there...” things.
If more people saw what we saw that weekend it would be our most popular video.

I'll add this: if you are making a gourd canteen and want to get the bitter flavor out so as not to make your water take on the natural bitterness of your container, this is the process. Boil water and make a strong tea of your liking (mint is cooling and a good option for this). Let the tea cool, then pour into your gourd container. Let this stand for a 24 hour period with good airflow around your container. Do this 4 times allowing the gourd to dry in between each "soaking" period.( Otherwise mold may be an issue....trial and error on that one. Oops!) After the 4th pass, your gourd canteen should have taken on the flavor of the tea, and will not be bitter. A little bees wax around the lip of the container and you should be good to go.

speaking from a failure experience at trying to make a pitch lined gourd water bottle..........

dont use pitch.......it goes rock hard almost instantly, even if the gourd is warm first.

    best to use beeswax.
