Black Bear season starts tomorrow, so I hiked into the canyons by the cabin to check on activity and a couple of dens that get used. The monsoons are still hitting daily and the wild flowers are everywhere.

Stopped at an old campsite and cooked up lunch (spam, onions and Colby jack cheese), took a short nap and started home.

Yes, 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun. I cast a 350 grain, wide flat nose bullet driven to 1660 fps. It gives me all the recoil I want. I use to shoot a 425 grain bullet at 1800 fps. and would get a whooping headache after a few rounds.

Semo, it works well except when the winds gust through the canyon, then you hug the ground for air!

Bear season is still on, so I went into the higher elevations to look for fresh sign. We had hard rains two days ago and now water is abundant. Here are some photos of the hike.

Jumped this bull in the lower elevations.

STPNWLF , you are correct, it's a Diamond "Cure" single cam, carbon riser. I switched today from recurve to compound as I am half way through my hunt, so it's get serious time now. Glad you made it though the storm!

Most of the snow from our last storm has melted and I was able to hike into the canyons behind the cabin. As I stepped out on the porch to depart, two coyotes were heading the same direction I was taking.

Found a fresh deer carcass, probably why the Coyote's we're headed.

Made it to an old Indian rock cache. It was broken into several years ago and it was rumored to have contained sealed clay jars full of corn.

After a good hike and headed home I located a emergency food ration (EFR) barking at me. He was left for a later date.

Had to go back and read through this whole thread - such great looking country. Seems like the ideal blend of decent elevation without tons of snow to contend with. I used to live in AZ, but I didn't get much of a chance to explore NM at the time. I wish my elk hunting was in country as open as that! Keep the trip reports coming!

Back into the canyons today to repair an old campsite that is located in a eroded boulder.
    IMG_20180306_105412325.jpg

I cleaned out all the old debris that had accumulated over the last couple of years and rebuilt the back wall to block wind.
    IMG_20180306_150338033.jpg

This campsite is located at the mouth of a box canyon with rock walls approximately 200 feet high with no way out. I am always amazed how the elk will go deep into the canyon to bed down. Mountain lions get some every year because the elk get trapped.

Some of the crazy erosion that occurred in the canyon.
    IMG_20180306_140401244_HDR.jpg

A fresh elk rub out side the entrance to the campsite, the bulls are getting ready to drop their horns in the next couple of weeks.

Great day in the field, all down hill heading home!

Thanks guys, the area is about 6 miles wide by 10 miles long and a lot of it looks the same. Hopefully I don’t bore you with the same terrain over and over, it’s all I have to work with for the most part.

Hiked into the high country yesterday. Most of the snow has melted off, the north slopes only have a couple of inches left. Here are some vista photos.

In the center of this photo (grasslands) is the National Radio Obseratory very large array. The photo was taken at approximately 25 miles from where I was at. If you expand the photo you can see the radio dish hanger and some of the dishes deployed over a 20 mile area.

I jumped a group of elk with some mule deer mixed in but could not get my camera up in time. Great day in the field!
