Anyone else ate up with the overland bug? 4 wheeling, mudding or car camping is what we call it around here but apparently globally it has the overland moniker. Vehicle maintenance, operations and upgrades/repair has been a plan for sometime so this allows me the opportunity to break stuff and fix it. Also, another chance to use my knives to carve out adventure for myself and friends. Its a lot easier to find folks to go take some "roads" and car camp than it is to death march and camp with low amounts of gear.
@Jeff Randall is gonna be mad that you stole his car. You gonna bring it back at Bushcraft. I use to have an old S10 size blazer that had a nice overland/camp set up.
Oh, I thought this thread was going to be Lewis and Clark Expedition-ish. You know you are getting old when all your friends want to do is car camp. Where is my mom's 1983 Caprice station wagon when I need it?
It is. From a serious overland undertaking in dangerous or inhospitable country to taking old trails to recreate historical crossings to a glimpse of adventure down a dirt road in your hometown its for all of us.
Overland is the new "tactical" or "bushcraft". I like driving places and offroading, while being self sustained, but am starting to cringe everytime I hear or read the word overland. I don't think it helps that every third person on Instagram or Youtube who knows at least one other person with a 4WD and owns a roof top tent has started their own _____ Overland and act like everytime they leave the pavement they are a Discovery Channel reality show somewhere in deepest darkest Africa. Or whore themselves out for whatever sponsor will give them free stuff. /end of unwarranted mini rant. I promise to add usefull content to this thread later to make up for the above.
Good point. I am fortunate to have quite a few folks always interested in hitting the woods. I have noticed that people around the 40ish mark do tend to want to ride to the destination though.
We have to travel some stupid distances here just the way it is. It is big business in it's own right and we have some spectacularly remote ares to visit (think having to arrange fuel drops etc ahead of time). My Toyota is set up for long distance remote are travel (heavy suspension, long range fuel tanks, water, at least to spare tyres (on rims) ) as opposed to hardcore off 4x4ing/rockcrawling etc. A few years ago we took off up into the NT for close to six weeks, around 12,000km round trip as I recall. Loved almost every moment of it. I am off hunting at the end of the month and for me that will mean around 8hrs behind the wheel there and the same back. Normally my mate and I travel together but our plans mean we will go separately.
Off road touring is great fun, drive some beautiful scenery to fantastic destinations then camp, fish, hunt and hike out from chosen camp sites. Will have to take a picture of my new 130.
So, what is everyone using for portable air? I've had a Viair system for a decade that finally melted down and an inexpensive Slime brand model that has exceeded every expectation in the five years I've owned it and keeps pumping away. I want something that can be swapped from vehicle to vehicle, but it will primarily be staying in my wife's car. Doesn't need to be able to run air tools, etc, just inflate up to a 33" tire without taking half a day to do it.
Yeah mate it took a while to find one that was in reasonable condition, flew to Perth to look at a couple of 130s and drove one back. I have a bushranger aircomp that I got in 2006 that has been all over Queensland and the NT, pumped up around 50-60 tyres now mainly around the 33" size with a couple of cars with 35"s. Still going as strong as the day I got it. Pretty good for a budget model 99 model with a 300tdi Here she is on the trip from Perth at the Caiguna blow hole
That is a clean looking 130 mate !!! Yes I am surprised how well my Bushranger compressor has held up, I grabbed it second hand and other than replacing the air hose (as I fugged up the end fitting dropping it on concrete) it has been great ! I keep looking at the "Kings" ones on sale but can't make the jump LOL
