These types of questions come up a lot, "Should I get an 870 or a Mossberg 500?" "What's the best gun for deer hunting?" I'm sure people who know you and are thinking about getting into guns at some point have said, "What type of gun should I have for self-defense?" Some of us have all kinds of very specialized guns (a competition Trap gun or a 10 ga goose hammer), but if you could impartially recommend 5 guns for the average person to have in the order of importance (starting with the first), what would they be? I'll start. 1. Glock 19. Very practical. Easy to shoot. Easy to learn on, can carry it anywhere. 2. Remington 870. With this you can do home defense, get into hunting. Have fun shooting skeet. 3. Ruger American Rimfire. Now, you can start getting into riflemanship. Start learning about bullet drop, etc. Learn about running a bolt prior to using semi-autos. 4. AR-15. Good, all around rifle capable of doing a lot of different things, not super heavy, plenty of firepower. 5. Larger caliber bolt gun. .30-06, .308, or .270. Remington 700, Ruger American Rifle, Winchester Model 70 or one of the Savages. None of these will break the bank and you can do everything from concealed carry to hunting elk. You'll also be a well-rounded shooter. You can find tons of parts for all of the above so customization and maintenance would be easily done. Anyone have a different list? Absent is a lever action, and my favorite gun-the Scout. So I think there's room for improvement.
1. Ruger 10/22 2. G19 3. Ruger Scout in .308 4. 870 for most, 590A1 if Left handed 5. Ar-15 BCM or equivalent quality If I could only have one, it would be the 870 Police (Vang comp).
My list would be similar to yours (ignoring the laws here in Aus). 1. Brno Mod2 .22RF/Ruger 10/22 2. G19/17/34 whichever one was most comfortale with. 3. 870 or Ithaca M37 4. A quality BA .308 5. FN/FAL/L1A1
Since the average person probably is budget conscious: Glock 19 AR in 5.56 Mossberg 590 (Don't care for customer service but excellent design once you adapt to the safety) Of course, the Ruger 10/22 Savage 10 FCP-SR in 24" .308 or older 10FP. I've had a lot of trigger time on the original 110 Tactical and the 10FP and have shot quite a few Remingtons and some Accuracy Internationals, PSG1s, and McMillan Customs. Even if I listed more expensive firearms like an HK 91, the G19 and 10/22 would still be in my Top 5 and the Savages are just tough/accurate.
I would have a hard time arguing against your list and mine would look the same. Good choices there. I would wonder where a revolver would fit on that list. I learned to shoot with my dads JC Higgins .22 revolver by shooting cans at my Grandpa's junk pile on the farm.
I'll agree with Glock 19 even though I dislike them. I'll buck the 10/22 trend here and say Marlin Model 60. I really don't think there's a better cheap .22 out of the box. Remington 870 because of all the easy ways it can be configured in a shotgun role. AR in 5.56/2.23 because it's the rifle equivalent of Lego. Savage Model 10/11 in a large bore caliber because of the amazing trigger and use of a barrel nut.
Ruger 10/22 Ruger 10/22 Ruger 10/22 Ruger 10/22 Bolt action .22 any flavor. You'll walk out of this a superior rifleman to anything else.
1. G23 or G22 w/a 9mm stormlake barrel. I'm a 40sw lover. 2.stoger M3500 12ga budget conscious semi. 3. Aero precision AR15 in 5.56/223 4.ruger MK series or 22/45 pistol. 5. Any good 308 boltaction. I'm a fan of the ruger American Rifle, savage 10/110, and Remington 7/700.
Hmmm. Here's my list. G17/G19 - personal preference 870/590 - again personal preference AR in 5.56 Ruger 10/22 or Henry leverl action .22lr some variety of large caliber bolt action
5 gun list: 870 12ga - it's a classic that is easy to use and clean. Plus if you forgot a hammer it will work. S&W 686- .38/.357 wheel guns are easier for beginners IMO. Henry Big Boy-.357 can shoot same caliber as pistol. CZ 452 scout-.22 awesome quality with out breaking the bank. Remington 700- I'm a tikka guy but the 700 is a very universal platform ESEE 6- when I run out of ammo
Magnum research 10/22 .22 rifle CZ phantom SP01 9mm pistol 18" spikes AR15 rifle .223/5.56 Remington 870 pump 12G Thompson center Venture bolt action 30-06
I'm curious why you would recommend the CZ Phantom SP01. I'm not familiar with this pistol, although I've shot a few CZ's. I'm assuming you like it a lot. What makes you prefer this over other handguns? For example, grip, controls, etc.
It's a CZ . Really I like the manual of arms for all CZ pistols. No safety (on mine), decocker, ability to carry chambered with hammer down is good also. The phantom is a polymer frame so it's light, yet retains the legendary CZ reliability. I also shoot it extremely well which helps. One of the better full size, accurrate, reliable combat pistol out there for sure. I'm still waiting for someone to make a SA/DA hammer fired single stack 9mm with a decocker. I'd buy it as a carry gun in a second. Guns like the CZ Rami are nice, but at that thickness you might as well carry a P01 (which I do).
I agree. That's why I can't understand why someone wants one with a safety on it. You can't make them safe!
