My 18 year old son is graduating from high school on Sunday. He is also an eagle Scout and we haven't done his party for that either. Anybody have any good ideas for gifts? I wanted to get him a foot locker/custom designed wooden trunk/box, but I haven't found anything I like enough to pull the trigger. Any wood workers on here with some ideas?

A footlocker is not a difficult design, ever thought about trying to make it your self, it would make it worth even more to him. You could use old pallet wood or get some fence slats pretty cheap. Or get some hardwood but it would be quite a bit more expensive.

Something of a lasting quality that he can pass down to your grandchild or his grandchild.

I found a military wooden trunk years ago that was for holding lights. It had a top tray and was pretty solid. Did a few mods to it including adding plates to the bottom to screw short legs into,to hold it off the ground while camping. Gave it to my son for Scout Jamborees and long term camps. He still has it at 33 years old and uses it now for his music equipment.

    I like this idea.

I got my dad a "customized" and engraved Buck 110 for his retirement several years ago. I ordered straight from Buck website. I little pricey but it came out awesome and he absolutely loves it.

My stepdad taught fire college (fireman) back in the 70's and one of his graduating classes bought him a Buck 110 as thanks, he still cherishes that knife.
