Any of you guys do your own fertilizing or weed control for your yard? I just dumped my lawn care folks and decided to go rogue this year. I have a lawn that is 100% Bermuda which is very common here in the South. I have started with a starter fertilizer of 13-13-13, with an application of Milorganite. Been combating weeds with 2,4-D. Just looking for tips and tricks that ya'll may have tried and had success or failed miserably. Share your lawn stories and freshly mowed works of Art!!! This was from Mid summer 2016. This is what I'm trying to beat this year doing it myself!
Thanks! I do not have a sprinkler system our anything, However when rain fall gets low I do set out some impact sprinklers around.
Bermuda? Let that stuff grow a few feet tall and I'll bring my horses over. They'll have it cleared in a day or two.
No tips here but I do have a nice green lawn, to bad it's all weeds, but it's green. That is a fine looking yard you got there.
I'm not great with it, but do alright. I have a few friends that work in lawncare, so they can tell me what chemicals to buy sometimes. Other times I just have to look it up. You'll want to figure out what chemicals work for your weeds and stay on top of it. Bermuda isn't that great at blocking out everything else like Zoysia is. At least not the Bermuda that I've had. Generally most of the stuff you can buy from Lowes/Home Depot is pretty weak stuff that takes a long time to work. I think it's designed that way so you don't burn your lawn up quite so easily. Don't water in the evening/night unless its drought. Night watering promotes fungus. Fungicide is expensive.
This picture was the lawn early spring, before any treatment other than pre-emergent. So my first application of 13-13-13 and milorganite has all but ran its course. Getting ready to throw down my (step 2) application for the summer. Step 2) This consist of a three application 6 weeks after the first application. ~Crabgrass Preventative, probably going to use the a combination of Demention & Barricade w/potash. ~ Apply another round of my original fertilizer of 13-13-13 & Milorganite ~ Broadleaf post-emergent spray for visible weeds. 2, 4-D is working well for me. Side note, been taking care of my elderly neighbors yard here lately and right now.. well 3 weeks ago it was a salad bar of nasty weeds. This thing look hopeless...Challenge Accepted!! First application of 2, 4-D was applied a little weak but it did stunt the weeds fairly well, which allowed me to see the Bermuda grass that was actually still living, be it really choked out. I applied a better dose last night, going to let it set for 48-72 hours then scalp that joker down. Hopefully after a good scalp'n the Bermuda will have the opportunity to start taking over. Going to throw down some 13-13-13 on his front yard as well next week. Pics to follow before I scalp it down.
Mix a load of salt into the soil. Makes it so you never have a weed problem or have anything grow. Only problem the sheep will leave and go to greener pastures.
I normally use a higher (but slow release) nitrogen formula. 28-3-10 50% slow release, 4.5% iron. Greens it up well, but the slow release nitrogen keeps me from getting a growth surge. Haven't fertilizer yet because it isn't all the way green here yet. But getting really close. Cut it taller in the summer, and don't give any high nitrogen in the fall or winter. I usually do a 5-10-31 or a combo 5-10-20 w/ pre-emergent in the fall.
Sprayed my yard with some Wisdom TC Flowable this morning. If it crawls it dies. **** em all! No more bugs for me!
I got a new found friend... a f***** MOLE!! He's ripping it all up! I got to get an insect killer quick
