.... on his 550 cord on mine hootchie cord, it is a simple loop around the rifle and back through the swivel. Done it as long as I can remember on all my (well our) hunting rifles. It harks back to the day of swivels screwed into wood stocks pulling out at most inopportune moments. If you imagine the rifle slug normally and the rear stud letting go, the rifle will almost drop down directly on the butt, but if the front goes it is a loooooong arc down. If my memory serves it is originally a Kiwi thing but we adopted it as well. Cheap insurance.

That's a good idea for sure. I figured it was for that purpose and wanted the details. I've already had one of them damn QD sling swivels come loose on me and it was the front one like you're describing. Real nice when you're rifle goes muzzle first into the mud.

Exactly how it happens. I like the hootchie cord over 550 cord (basically green Venetian blind cord - 5Col sells a version).

Great post! That trip looks like it was trophy enough deer or no deer.

Yes that's what I said walking through it. That is right alone the ridge (well in one of the few spots where you were not walking up/downhill anyway). That ground is like a mattress its so spongy !!

Fantastic photos, really enjoyed them. Too bad it was such a short trip cut shorter. One thing makes me wonder is the rifles just laying on the dirt. Never seen that before but my only experience with them is military and as a kid where shooting was a near constant pastime or later on ranges. Never did serious hunting but countless gophers etc.

    Thanks for sharing,
    Kevin

Not too short, still 8 days in the bush albeit with two lost to rain, I could easily have stayed much longer... to the rifles, you lay them down carefully and generally within reach, ejection side of the action up and you will have few problems no matter where. They don't just get thrown there of course. You will also note the muzzles are taped up to prevent water/crud ingress.

I would be happy to fly back tomorrow... :D But I will have to settle for a week in the bush here starting late next week.

I somehow got the idea it was shorter than that. Glad it was longer. Yeah, I get the impression your used to handling rifles just surprised to see them there. I was a weekend warrior weapons tech. Usual rifle then while running around was a FN C2...

You mean a Long Branch C2 ... ;) Australia issued the L2 which was the Aussie made version. We actually sourced a number of the part for L2 production (gas block and tangent sight parts) from Canada. Everything was interchangeable between a Canadian C1/C2 and Aussie L1/L2 9as well as the British made L1A1s). A fine series of rifles. My L1A1F1 is probably my most missed toy.

Yes I miss shooting the FN. We also had a bunch of the .22 cal conversion kits for shooting indoors. I miss my HK91...

Looked like a great experience Andy and an entertaining read, amazing photos as usual.

Do you think that you would do the same location if you were to do the trip again?

I am off bush again next weekend for another week of bothering the wildlife, my mate has copied all his pics and video from the trip to a USB drive for me so I will see what else I can fish out of there to post up. He took much more video than I.

    ...even nicer in person !!!

.....some little **** bag from up the north coast that stole a car and took off heading to Perth. My guess is his sperm donor father or some dick relative lives over there. Apparently he does not 12 but closer to 20. Also Broken Hill is not 75% of the way, more like 30% if that. It does not surprise me he made it that far once he was about 6hrs into the journey it is relatively remote and less and less Highway Patrol.
