I have never, ever used a safe in a room. Actually, I used one in Mexico City to hold the chair, that was holding the table, that was holding the door.

I was using a safe in a hotel in Bogota Colombia one time and it malfunctioned (it was electronic). They sent a bellhop up who used the master code that everyone in the hotel knew, to open it. That was the end of it for me.

Just treat your passport and immigration (visa) papers like they were your first child and you'll be ok. We've had several people on trips that lost their passport and some lost their immigration papers. It's just a bitch getting them replaced when there is no consul in the town you're in and you have to fly back to the major city to get it done and you can't fly unless the police see valid visas. There are ways to get it all done but it's just easier hanging on to your papers for dear life.

There's only one master password for everything in Colombia.

One other piece of advice: Paint the outside of your passport black and you won't even have to go through the immigration or customs line.

With his beard, and that rag hat he wears, he is sure to get flagged at every point of entry.

He should just go straight to the secondary inspection every time.

Now I'm understanding why you put waterproof bags in the passport case. Makes sense.

Wife got to go through extended search the last time she flew. Allegedly, she had bomb residue on her bag. I guess its ok if they check it twice and pat you down. All i can think is that bag was stored in the garage near all her fertilizer and other chemicals she uses on the garden.

All you have to do is ask and they will make sure you get one. Again, if that doesn't work then just put some Krylon on it but be sure to tape around the seal area and not cover that up.

Yes and yes. I personally like the Aegis Secure Key the best but have both the IronKey and Aegis. And if you want to get real fancy you can use Steganography to hide your personal info inside a picture in the encrypted drive. That way you don't just burn all the info and piss off the guy wanting you to open your files. You just keep a bunch of photos on there along with a few dummy files that look important but aren't, then have all your real personal stuff hidden inside a naked photo of your wife.
