Well, I walked into Peru Customs with an unsigned passport application and they made me go home.

    They can't. State law.

Wait, was this on Sunday? They have blue laws.

That solves it. I'm definitely ending up in a jail somewhere with an unsigned passport on a Sunday because i was wearing blue. However, once they see the expat knives sticker on one of the pages of the passport they will treat me like a king.

This thread is the best example of why you never solicit important information from this site.

sheep, Chinese knives and dirty women? sure, but never important information.

If you want to travel to Canada and Mexico without a passport then the card is nice. I always renew both the card and passport so I have both.

Man, you must not get out much if you're that happy to go the post office. I'm afraid you might be disappointed.

Card not necessary. I do have one, it stays in my front pocket wallet while passport stays in neck pouch.
Most of our travels are not to touristy areas. I like the extra copy.
Also keep a photocopy of passport in luggage/stashed at housing, where ever that proves to be.
Leave a photocopy at home as well.

Also scan a copy of your passport and email it to yourself and save it in your inbox. Even if you lose all your clothes, you'll be able to pull up a copy on an Embassy computer. If the State Department bothers to treat you like anything other than a pest.

I keep my passport on me at all times even though the experts say otherwise. If it gets stolen it's a singular incident and I can get it replaced. If the country goes into chaos, I may not be able to get back to my hotel or other place it's stashed to get it. By the time I get to the Embassy then it will be overwhelmed with people. Learned that during the Jakarta riots when I was working overseas.

Mine is on page 34 of my inbox. Been there a while. I need to bump it to the top.
Thanks for the reminder that it is there.

Agree 100%. Always keep your passport on you when you travel. I don't care what the "experts" say. Clearly the experts never had to get to the airport in a hurry, or got questioned by an over zealous federale.

Not to mention, you're more likely to have your hotel robbed than your passport stolen off of your person. And if you think the room safe is safe, you're flat wrong. The safes exist so that the thieves can get everything in one centralized spot.
