Anyone have suggestions for things to avoid or do in getting your very first passport?

Call ahead and ask what to bring.

Make sure everything is spelled correctly.

Don't wait til the last minute to get it.

Its really pretty simple. I set up an appointment at the post office and had it in no time.

Download Form DS-11 off the state dept website. It tells you everything you need.

Go online and fill out the form. Get your passport photo at Walgreens. Need original birth certificate.

Like said above read over the instructions ahead of time they are pretty thorough. I also suggest paying extra attention to the photo instructions.... There may be what photos the post office says passes to submit but the Feds are A LOT stricter....Walmart also does the passport photos.

I get that a lot. People always think I'm joking and I don't think I've ever made a joke in my life.

Yeah, well, walk into Peru customs with an unsigned passport and see whether you make it past the inspector. Been there, done that. Mine's signed.

I was talking about the application. Show up to the USPS with a signed application and you gotta do it over.

You have to sign the passport. I landed in Munich one time and anyone without a signed passport paid a 200 Euro fine.
