Burned my right hand the other day, and thought I'd contribute to the thread:D

2nd degree burn. Was out in the back woods when it happened, so I simply put some snow on it to ease the pain/cool the burn.

Decided not to apply first aid in the field for numerous reasons.

Once back (1.5 hours later), a good friend and paramedic treated me. Rinsed it in lukewarm water for 10-15 minutes, rinsed with saline, dried the burn and surrounding area with roughly 5 individual sterile gauze pads, then applied 1 sterile gauze pad over the burn, then wrapped with an elastic conform bandage.

Here are some pics of the original dressing. This was after a couple hours, and the conform bandage did suffer some damage from some Velcro.

Now, I was advised it would be alright to remove the above bandage that night and redress it, however, I had been up for over 34 hours at that point, and I decided to leave it on overnight.

I redressed it this evening, and here's what it looked like after taking the original bandages off.

No blister! I was expecting it to blister up.

I redressed it with one 2"x2" sterile gauze pad, with Polysporin "Complete" on the burn, then wrapped with a 3" elastic conform bandage (didn't have a 2" on hand, will need to restock).

Feels great, no pain, and no sign of infection or other abnormalities. Hopefully it stays that way!

I plan to redress the same way every 24 hours, unless the bandaging is compromised within that time.

Rolls of gauze are bloody expensive!

    Nearly $5 for a single 5cm x 2.5m roll!

Hand burns can go sideways quickly so keep a good eye on this.
Wait, I thought healthcare and treatment sequela were covered by the government up there.

I certainly will. Any sign of infection or other abnormalities, and I'll be heading to the Doc.

Assuming you have insurance, it covers a lot of the cost for a trip to the Doc or ER, etc. But buying minimal first aid supplies to redress a wound is entirely up to you.

I need a medal. I was out in the woods today and did not ruin my clothes or cause any bleeding.

Batoning crabapple wood for a fire on Labor Day with my E5 and it got stuck in a twisted limb. Tried to dislodge it using wooden wedges and a wedge broke and my trigger finger decided to get between the baton and the log being split. I set it myself and iced it over night until I could see my GP the next morning. She sent me to an orthopedist and I've had to keep it in the splint until two weeks ago. I see the orthopedist again tomorrow for an 8 week follow up and hopefully I'll be released from light duty.

Put a dampener on this archery deer season, the rest of hunting season was going to be a wash for me anyway because we're prep'n for a new baby in February.

I took a pretty good fall off of a ladder a few years ago. I got 13 staples at the ER.

Most of my hair has fallen out anyway. It did leave a pretty nice scar though.

Got this little doozy while out making my gift for the Secret Santa gift exchange tonight!

Slammed my hand into the corner of a drill press vise. Tore it right open.

Wasn't wearing gloves due to operating belt sanders and my drill press.

That whole area is just one big flap of skin, completely lifted off the finger.

Hurts like a bugger. Take the pain of hitting your thumb with a hammer and combine it with the searing pain of having your flesh torn open.

Unfortunately for me, I had just finished a beer not 5 min before this, so when I went into minor shock from the extreme pain, I got nauseous.

    Really nauseous.

Thankfully there's no tendon damage, and little to no nerve damage.

Cleaned around it with some rubbing alcohol, repositioned the lifted skin as best I could, and covered it with a 1x2 section of sterile gauze with some Polysporin Complete. I then entombed it with about 5 Elastoplast bandages in lieu of tape, completely sealing the gauze, but still letting it breathe. The stiffness of the bandages also acts as a bit of a splint, which is nice.

I'll likely tear the bandages open 24 hours from now and inspect it, but for now, it feels alright.

Your Tdap should be UTD but would verify.

Also, do some reading on initial wound management, petrolatum content of most topicals, and differing opinions on application. Quite a bit of new info available since wound care is becoming a booming business.

I know for a fact my Tdap is UTD due to having been OD'd on it when I was younger. Docs said I shouldn't have a booster for it until I'm at least the age I am now, if not longer.

As far as initial wound care, I'm Wilderness first aid certified, but if you have any recommended reading, more knowledge never hurts.

I've heard varying opinions on the use of topicals, but this stuff was recommended to me by our previous family doc, and has seen me through many a nasty injury, including damn near splitting my thumb in half with a Fiskars hatchet.

I don't use it on other people, but I like it for myself.

That's a lot of ABCs. Is a UTD a Urinary Tract Disinfection with a TDAP brush? How do you OD on that?

But seriously, if you have a Urinary Tract Infection, and are using a TDAP brush to Disinfect it, and something becomes OD green, be it the brush or your urethra, you need help.

    So much help.
