So I'm in quite the conundrum, of the good variety.

My step mom is retiring from corrections and her duty pistol is a full size M&P in .40S&W.

She absolutely hates it, but she bought one to train with a long time ago. She's going to give it to me since I'll actually do something with it. I have nothing else in .40, I transferred over to 9MM a long time ago and just never looked back. I have a M&P 9L Pro Series that's my "go to war" gun for the TNP crowd.

I'm trying to decide what "job" this gun will hold. I figured I had a few options, including pimping it out. But I figured the best bet would be to place it in a go bag of some sort. Keep it under the truck seat, or in the closet with spare mags, ammo and other essential gear just in case. I've never had the luxury of having a spare handgun that I could just leave and forget about. I figured this may fit that bill perfectly.

Do you guys have any spare handguns(something other than your primary carry or range toy), and if so - what job do they hold?

Why not trade it for another 9mm if you dont shoot 40?

Yep... If that doesn't hurt her feelings. It would be great to be able to share magazines and ammo. "Two is one"

I would barrel swap thus keeping everything the same.

XD9 Tactical is my spare. It sits with 15 loaded mags and a bag of additional ammo.

I forget what the exact names are but they are Maxpedition pouches. The mags sit in one that can be attached to the belt and the ammo is in one that is a plain jane pouch. 6x4x2 I believe.

Makes sense. Barrel swap would be an awesome way to do it like 357 says.

Especially since of already have the 9mm Mags. Hell. Sell the .40 mags and barrel. Would pay for the new barrel.

I'm done with all the different calibers. 9mm,.357,.223/.556, and .22lr. That's all I use anymore

.357 could do everything for me here in Illinois. I can carry it and hunt with it. Load light or hot. Best round ever! :)

To your question, the spare handgun is either a beater you train with to save your carry or a fun time gun for day at the range. In your case, it could just be a "son/daughter this was your grandmas handgun that kept her safe for # years and now its yours."

Keep the gun. It's a gift. I know. Ive sold things I won as you know and regret it. You will too.

Make it a truck gun or stow it in the barn somewhere in case you need it.

Did you say 15mags? My waistline is just now getting sufficient to carry these.
