In the recent past we've been allowing Alumni members to come in and "help" with the class. I took FS as a participant before I was on staff back in Dec of 2015.....when I came on staff it was just Jeff, Patrick, and myself...and I'm not sure which was tougher....as a participant or cadre. Early on the cadre didn't sleep and was up just as much as the students (suckers)......now we actually get some sleep which is nice!!

I noticed even with WFR that you guys were in constant motion.

Exactly. When he says they get sleep hes talking about a couple hours. They work very hard behind the scenes.

Yup, crashing planes, having kayak accidents, having a stroke in a tree stand, falling off rappelling towers. So busy.

....... in my part of the world we call that "Sunday" but I guess not everyone is as rugged (or good looking) as us... :D

I am actually impressed that there both people who off this training as well as a steady flow of people wishing to take it. Both speak volumes.

@Patrick Rollins Field Survival was awesome this past weekend. Had a blast. No longer sore, but my arms are covered in poison ivy. I learned a lot about pushing myself and learning about how little sleep and food you really need to survive the most common ordeals. I also learned a lot more about working as a team (I hate drum barrels now) and what being a leader entails. Thanks for all the great memories and the not so great ones haha.

@shaneadams90 don't mention it. They looked out for me just as much as I did for them. And you don't have to worry about that, I think I'll be signing up for an Advanced Survival course next to experience a little more of a relaxing pace. I am curious if you or Patrick would be willing to evaluate a personal survival kit that I assembled some time ago. It is sort of a hobby of mine to make the most comprehensive kits in the smallest packages as possible, but I haven't had any real input from experts in the field on it's good or not. If I mailed it down to you all, and let you take a look at it, do you think that it could be a possibility to get some feedback?

Thanks @shaneadams90. I’ll take some pictures and make a list of what the items are in a sequential order and upload to a new thread.

Both Jackson and Parker have it pretty bad. Jackson had to get a steroid shot and pack. Parker has been gone on a college retreat and we will see him today. He had a good dose of it BEFORE he went to FS.

I can believe it. I think I would choose to take the course in the fall or winter if I had to do it over to avoid the fields of poison ivy.

Attending Field Survival next week. Got a couple questions:

    1) Any clothing tips for March in Alabama?
    2) Is a ferro rod striker unauthorized?

Long pants and and long sleeve shirt. I made the mistake of wearing a tshirt (granted it was may) and wished I had worn a long sleeve fishing shirt of some sorts to keep the poison ivy off of my arms. Lots of poison ivy out there (maybe not this early in the season) so cover your skin. Bring a quality rain jacket and a warm pullover as well. Looks like cold nights and rain on the forecast for your class.

And yes, I brought a striker attached on paracord with my ferro rod and it was allowed.

Good luck. Remember to keep a positive attitude and don't give up even when you want to. You'll make it through. It will end even when you think it won't.

Thank you. How do you carry all of it? Are you allowed a backpack? I’m just going off the items I read on the class description and don’t wanna bring any contraband lol

"Fixed blade knife with sheath, Ferrocerium rod, clothing appropriate for the season, hiking boots (broken in), water container (hydration packs are acceptable), cap or bandana, mirrored baseplate compass, pace count beads (optional). No other personal gear (including watches, cameras and phones) are allowed during the course."
