Couple pics from today. I'll add details when I have time. Was showing a buddy an old trappers cabin in my area. 5th pic is bear tracks right outside the cabin

    trip report:

took my buddy and his awesome black lab for an explore this weekend. Buddy is on Disability , doesn't work and lives very remotely in Mission BC. He's gotta walk (no car, no bike) about 10 KM's each direction just to get groceries. He's moving soon, but not sure where.

buddy is a outdoorsman, spends everyday hiking the mountains right near him in Mission BC. Very skilled in the woods, stealth camping, living in the woods in the summer months.

I drove out to Mission BC to pick him and Boo up, then drove all the way up the Sea To Sky and off and up an logging FSR. Started encounter deep snow on the FSR, and my pickup won't make it up that stuff. Parked the rig, donned the load bearing webbing rig (a mix of Tyr Tactical, Velocity Systems, BlueForceGear, SORD AUS & Platatac Aus).

about 3' of semi hard packed granular snow still on the ground. Boo the dog ripped around , loving the exercise. We clambered up the embankment and navigated around the little lake to the trappers cabin.

cabin is still in great shape, well maintained by hunters / hikers. It is still leaning / sinking into the soft earth. But the highlight of the day was the new iron wood stove!!! Someone had dragged in a brand new 1/8" thick steel barrel stove with flat top surface. The old stove was tiny and put out no heat. The new one cranks the heat out!! New chimney pipes too!!

right outside the cabin was the meandering tracks of a big grizzly in the hard pack snow. As well there was cougar scratch trees and scat all over the forest around the cabin. Boo the dog never alerted to anything though the entire day.

we got the stove roaring hot, read the logbook, did some maintenance, filled the big kettle with snow to boil water for lunch (homemade dehydrated 8 bean, brown rice, crushed noodles, cumin ginger curry dehydrated food I had made a few days prior. Boo the dog ripped around the frozen lake dragging a stick.

bitter cold winds ripping down from the multiple glaciers in the area chilled us as we hiked out, but the physical exertion of climbing steep hills / snow banks had us losing our smocks & sweaters quickly.

I've been experimenting with multiple thin UnderArmour heat tight fitting long sleeve layers, instead of fleece sweaters. I find that the multiple thin layers dry faster under exertion when wet from sweat / rain , and it's easier to "micro-tune" the heat levels when rucking. As well, the thin long sleeve shirts are 75% lighter than a fleece, and pack WAY smaller into my L.R.R.P.R. webbing - that being said, I still had my SAS smock and surplus CDN Forces wool sweater, simply because due to the constant rapid changing weather systems up here : 5 to 10 deg C + / sunny one minute...... -20 C / sleet / snow storm / glacial winds the next.

we spent the afternoon checking out the cabin, eating hot food, cabin maintenance, tracking the bear by following its tracks for many KM's in the forest , and finally hiking out back to the main FSR trunk line and back down to the lower area where the truck was.

Drove down/up another FSR into another mountain valley behind more glaciers. Checked out a number of spots / viewpoints. Buddy was blown away by the sheer ruggedness of the area and the massive mountains/glaciers.

we then drove back all the way to his rental in Mission BC. Dropped him and Boo dog off and I drove all the way back to Vancouver. Put about 550 KM's on the truck total.

pretty awesome day. Got to show someone several mountain ranges , old cabin, river valley, that they would never get to experience, due to not being able to drive, no vehicle , etc. it was pretty cool.

Wow. He would’ve used a slightly different construction technique but that looks exactly like something my Dad would have built back when I was a wee snapper. That’s awesome…:)

    yeah

that cabin (and the one that burnt down many KM's below ), were built before there was any logging roads there in the 60's!

Trip report - Sunday April 24/2022

fellow adventurer & local @Twoody88 picked me up in his truck and we headed up to towards the Cheakamus Canyon region of BC Canada.

He wanted to check out the old trappers cabin and I was happy to guide him up. We stopped at the first cabin (burned down one :() and sifted thru the debris . Found lots of old 60's era 12" square iron spikes, and the old enamel bowl that's been in that cabin for decades. I salvaged both.

Drove further into the mountains and then hiked / bushwhacked thru the snow covered forest until we reached the cabin. The snowmelt had erased my tracks from last weekend, and there were no new bear or cougar prints in the soft snow. The grouse was loud, as was a woody woodpecker smashing his beak into a tree and warbling.

Swept the stove out, got a fire going fast with my waxed shop towel tinder, fatwood dust and yellow cedar kindling. My @Sam Wilson B.L.A.S.R. (His first generation ferro rod) showered the fatwood shavings with hot sparks and the fire was roaring hot fast.

@Twoody88 wandered the cabin, and outside, lost in the silence of the forest, the coolness of the old cabin.

Absolutley beautiful. We parked on one of the FSR's and packed it up the side of the mountain, bushy led the way like a dialed sherpa never missing a step. Up the banks over defrosting streams doing our best avoiding the tree wells and soft sink holes one foot at a time.. and then I looked up and there was the first cabin..
It filled my heart back up after the devastating scenery we just checked out at the last charred location, Once sight of hand made beauty nestled in Mother nature's arms now ashes.

I boiled water in the big kettle , on the hot wood stove, and soaked two boil in bag meals - spicy vegetable curry and wild herbed rice. Split it between me and @Twoody88 . Washed it down with triple packet hot chocolate.

we spent a few hours just looking at the scenery, going thru the cabin supplies, playing with multiple knives.....I quite like that Busse blade @Twoody88 had....

Swept out the stove of ashes, prepped kindling, tinder for the next person to use, and closed up the cabin to wild animals. Hiked out and headed back down the FSR , to another spot down the highway.

Decided to come back to the cabin in the future once the snow melts, and do some maintenance.

    Secret spot 2:

We hiked up another FSR and got to the second little cabin that's been there for many years. I was very surprised to see all the kindling, tinder, firewood, and firestarters I prepped/placed there years ago, untouched.

mind you the chimney at that hut is in serious need of replacement, and the hut is very well hidden - so little traffic / use.

we hiked back out and drove back to Vancouver . Awesome day, great hikes , and I got to meet another local forum member.

more adventures planned - stay tuned!
