    Got the new TJM snorkel fitted up today, all in all it would have been done in under an hour except for my needing to dab some touch up paint on a patch where the old snorkel had clearly trapped some fine gravel and rubbed through to the metal.

    The biggest draw for me of this model vs a Safari is that this is bolt in replacement for the old factory unsealed version where all the others require cutting of the guard and maybe the airbox.

    Touched up with some clear door edge tape over it (looks a bit ugly but it’s under the new snorkel as well, just wanted to keep the cancer out..

    Pulled my drawer set a few weeks ago. Stained the main part of the drawers, replaced the hinges on the side wings with spring loaded ones and doubled up on the slides for the drawers. It's also actually anchored to the floor now.

    Well a day in “lockdown” not wasted !! I was happy when the Fedex guy arrived with the box during the week so I have a little to do !!! For those unfamiliar with the 70Series TLCs they are the “Military/Industrial” models (only saw that designation when I had to get a job done by Toyota and that is how it showed up in their system) and are appointed with this in mind. They were first introduced in 1985 and have remained in production since (with very very few upgrades !!!). Anyway when they came out they had no centre consoles (they didn’t have two bucket seats but one (driver) and a 1 ½ seat to allow an uncomfortable third person to sit in the front. So they have added a bit to say they have a console/cup holder but franky it all just sucks. Thankfully there are several business here that cater to the might 70 !!!

    So factory “luxury” appointment…

    ]

    As Brad Pitt would scream….”what’s in the box”…

    [IMG][/URL
    ]

    …..lots of air packets that’s for sure !!!

    So tore it all out…..

    [IMG][/URL
    ]

    …..the factory “cup holder” has a single light plug power source, this has a single lighter plus and two USBs.

    Unusually for me I actually took my time getting it all cleaned under and lined up, cut and off the old plug fitting and added the new ones to join up to the new plugs….

    [IMG][/URL
    ]

    It was a bit of a bastard to get it dropped down, pushed forward into place and the first retaining bolts in place….but with a little swearing and no damage in it went…

    [IMG][/URL
    ]

    ….. you can see there the one specialist fitting tool I needed to use….!! The last retaining bolt is under that removed cup holder and goes straight down into the floor (all the bolts use existing factory fitting – makes like a little easier). This is with three out of four bolts all correctly aligned (two at the back one at the very front) but the last one was about ½ a hole out, just hogged it out a little with the blade.

    And finally all done …..

    Thanks yes, I am really happy with the results. A console was the only modification that I was SURE I would do from the get go. The only question was which maker I would use. Both have pros and cons but once I weighed them all up I landed here. The other maker does do a shelf which mounts across about the rear doors, it includes speaker mountings, one of those *may* be in my future (but after a number of other things)... :D

    This is who made the console above...

    And the other...

    https://www.consoles.com.au/Toyota_Land76_choose_console.htm

    both have excellent reputations.

    And lockdown continues so the truck got some more attention......

    I ordered up some speaker door pods and new speakers that will take a couple of weeks or more to arrive. Reading up on it they recommend you put some sound deadening inside the doors (on the outer skin) and I remembered that I actually had some sheets of professional deadening material leftover from when I laid it in the cargo bay over the wheel arches so I dug it out, found my trim tools (watched a YouTube vid on how to do it) and away I went.....

    Door card off....

    [IMG]

    Started to cuts the sheets to fit....

    [IMG]

    And the inside when it is stuck on.....

    [IMG]

    ....not the most exciting piece of work but it killed most of the afternoon. Was about a half sheet short to finish the front doors some ordered some more and will then finish the front, do the rear and barn doors (eventually).

    Also test fit the spare wheel gear bag that arrived this week.....

    New speakers on next on my list. My Bach concertos are sounding fuzzy in one or two of my stock speakers.

    Same here passenger side speaker cuts in and out and drivers side has a bunch of distortion with even a little bass. But if that’s the only problems my truck has I’m still happy!

    70Series trucks are a bit industrial (that is exactly their designation with Toyota, well "Military/Industrial") so the factory sound is ....ummmmmm......."disappointing". I replaced the dash speakers last year but that was only to make it bearable, it has an Alpine head unit and the new front speakers on order are also Alpine. The back speakers are burried so deep it really doesn't matter.

    Got a shipment of goodness in before the weekend, enough sound deadening material to finish the front doors properly and do the two rear doors (passenger) there is maybe enough leftover to do one of the barn doors at the back but I will wait now. Also received the speakers and the mounting pods etc for those. Pics etc soon.

    I have now literally done the work I planning for the next year in the last month (screw you lockdown) so I need to both start turning tricks at the truckstop again and move onto the 2022 schedule of work... :D :D

    @Andy the Aussie that's a mod my Tacoma could use, but I'll probably hold off. At 255k miles, I'm starting to shop around. The Americanized Prado is starting to look good. I'm thinking 2004-09 range hits the spot for cost vs. mileage vs. capability.

    One this about the 70s is being "industrial" they are a bit noisy inside, my non-scientific tests tell me that the sound deadening and speakers hide it from me nicely. Done't also underestimate the value of a reasonable sound system to help with the comfort and your ability for a looooong drive.

    You do get a few models over there we don't, some look interesting but I don't know enough about them.

    This is a Lexus GX470. @shaneadams90 drives ones. With just a few mods they go from pedestrian to pretty trail capable.

    I think the GX470 is a 120 Prado with a V8, the Lexus variant of the 200 is LX570. And the GX460 is a 150 Prado with a V8
