Figured I'd start a thread for mushroom hunting. Went out for morels after turkey hunting. Got 21 yesterday evening and 179 this afternoon. Going back out tomorrow after hunting in the morning.

I’m not sure if those grow around here in the northeast

They do. I believe morels are found in all of the lower 48.

Any tips on areas to look? I have a few acres I could check easily.

Look under dead/dying standing elm, tulip poplar and ash. In that order. People claim Apple and sycamore hold them as well, but I've never done well targeting them. Ground Temps need to be above 50. Start with southern facing slopes, then northern facing as the weather warms up. Once you find a couple, your eyes will get tuned in to the lines and pattern of them. They will hide in plain sight. You'd be surprised how many will be a few feet or less from one's you just picked yet you don't see them. They blend in unbelievably well. Also, when you find some, take note of what area you're in and what the surrounding ground cover looks like. Eventually you'll be able to hop from one spot to another and save time.

Thank you. No living elm around here and I think ground temps are too cold still but I will start scouring. No poplar either but lots of ash.

Well I'm gonna eat crow. Went out today in the rain. Found 79, almost all of which were under or around sycamore.

They can hide in plain sight. Don't get discouraged. Your eyes gotta get used to picking out their physical characteristics.

That was my goal about 4 years ago. It's been a slow process, but I really enjoy it. I think it's become my favorite thing to do in the woods.
Thank you! It was 5 years ago when I first started looking. Each year you just keep learning. I'm getting to the point where I'm giving away a lot of them. Which is fine with me. Keeps me out looking more!

Didn't get any pictures from last weekend. Friday we got another 300-350. Buddy found a beauty though.

Back this weekend. Did a quick walk before dark. Ended up with 76 in about an hour.

Today's count is 239. Numbers are down but average size is up.

Well this is the last weekend for morels down at our property. Numbers are down and two out of three are too far gone to bother picking. It's been a good year so I've got no complaints. Always a little bummed out when season ends. It's such a great time just getting out with friends and putting some miles in.

Final count, 69. I'm guessing around 1500 for the season.
