The annual fitness test is first thing in the AM. Gotta remember to pace the old fashioneds tonight, or I'll be in for a rough morning.

Very cool. As you already know, land nav is a crucial skill in wilderness SAR. So many people using cell phones and other electronic devices nowadays (and they are great tools of the craft), but the basic skills of map and compass will get you through when those fail.

completely agree. We get issued a gps per team in the field, but all of our members are still expected to be able to navigate unassisted off paper if needed. Of course though, lot of people don't practice outside of the refreshers so those skills deteriorate. Thata why we are looking to get more guys formally qualified to teach it.

Hey what do you guys use for gloves? I had torn a pair 2 weeks ago, and last weekend I wore mechanics, which lead to me picking a whole lot of thorns out of my hands.

Petzl Cordex. They won't last long in real wet conditions like canyons because the leather will wear out but they are the best rescue gloves I've found for protection vs. feel. Most gloves are too heavy for me to do any detail work with them on. Cordex is as close as I can get to a compromise.

As a side note to this. I rarely wear gloves when rigging. Only use them when I have a rope going through my hand. Otherwise they're dangling on my harness.

Looking like I'm going to pick up a pair next payday.

Now if I can get my vest sorted I'll be ready to go.

Weed is going to be legal here in less than a week. I'm expecting a rash of mutual aid callouts.

Just heading out to help other municipalities. We are right next to Cook and DuPage counties, and they have huge populations.

It’s been legal nationwide here now for over a year and it hasn’t changed a thing as far as I’ve noticed (as far as type/frequency of callout).

That's good to know. I was a little tongue in cheek there but I'm not going to be too surprised if we get 1 or 2 lost in the park calls.

Lots of changes happening on my team. We got a few new officers last fall, and they assembled a training committee to improve on our current monthly training sessions. Looks like we will also be getting the team cross-trained for some basic areas of emergency management outside of SAR. NASAR Tech II and WFA are both on the horizon as well.

I'm being sent, along with a few other members, to take a 3 day man tracking course in April. Pretty stoked about that one.

That's what it's all about. Proud of you and anyone who dedicates their time to helping others and continually cross-training. What we've seen in the field is the more someone is cross-trained, the better they are at even the most basic tasks. If you can get in on an ICS-300 and then 400 class, do so. Even though you may not want to sit in IC during an op, training such as this will make you a better field technician. I'm on tap to go through both this year. Keep us posted on your training. Search and rescue is our passion.
