My wife’s grandma’s H&R Topper 148 passed down. It was made in the 50’s if I remember correctly. These were a lot thinner that the new, heavier ones today. Also a nice. Longer barrel.
The first pic of it, just before I pulled it apart and started to clean it up..... much prefer it without the Weaver on top.....
It is normally good down here the last couple of years have been a bit sad due to the severe drought we are in though !
Took out the 350 and 44 for the first time this morning. The 350 is such a pleasant round. Soft recoil, yet it has legs for a straight wall cartridge. I zero it 2" high at 50 and I'm dead on out to 150. That's as far as our range goes, but honestly that's the furthest I've ever shot at a deer in ohio anyhow. I'd like to take it out to a longer range just for the hell of it. I was grouping about 2" at 100 and 3" at 150. Ive got a Vortex sparc ar zero magnification red dot on it, so I'm happy with those groups. Winchester white box was flawless, however the Hornady American whitetail was problematic. Had a lot of cycling issues. The round just didn't want to seat correctly, whether it was the first round that I sent into battery or one down the line. Winchester uses a 357 bullet, so I'll look into Hornady and see if that's the issue. They might be using a 355. The Jm marlin 1894 in 44 mag was such a sweet shooter. It needs tuned in, but since I'm always one item short on my list of things to bring, I didn't have a flat head screw driver small enough to adjust the windage. Not really an issue for me since I'll be swapping out the sights with something else. My eyes suck, so the stock irons just don't work for me. Anything past 50 and I'd be guessing where I was aiming. I'd hate to put fiber optics on a lever gun but that may be where I go with this.
I have the XS Sight Ghost Ring Sights and Rail on my 1894 44 Mag, they are pretty nice, a lot better over the factory sights. https://www.xssights.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=993390
That's one I was looking at. Another is Skinner. I'm gonna start doing my research and go from there. Thanks for the link.
Very nice! How's the front sight to pick up? I do like how the xs sights have a white line on the front sights to stand out better. Also did you have to replace your front sight?
The front is really nice !!!! When this rifle arrived to me the factory front sight was missing so a new one was a must. I went (on their advice) with the Skinner Bear Buster. It is a nice black line that is not too wide but wide enough for snap shooting ! The Bear Buster can be ordered with a white face and he sells paint pens to do the ones with a dovetail base... http://www.skinnersights.com/front_sights_5.html
