Be careful of reading it while strapped to your kit bag. If you have anything metal in that bag then you will have problems. As far as inches or metric on the MC2s, I prefer the metric but it really doesn't matter if you are using a separate grid reader like we do. I never use the scales on the baseplate of the compass.

If you are talking about stainless steel in your arm, most body replacements are made of 300 series stainless which has very low carbon content and typically non magnetic. Best way to see is hold your compass up to your arm, hip, leg, head...whatever has the steel in it and see if the needle moves when you move it away. I doubt any body replacement parts are gonna give you an issue though.

I leave it stashed in my kitbag JIK , there is normally a larger metal object in the other pocket so I can def see that having some effects . I only really used it for hunting to orient myself to others and the wind but have always placed it on my wrist for use.

On the compass scale I honestly know C*r*p about the difference so I just will make it work.

Don't sweat the compass scale. Seriously. After you learn to use the compass, then you will probably not even use the scale on the baseplate. For most 1:24,000 maps with 1,000 meter grid spacing you can just about estimate your position as good as reading in with a scale.

I rarely use my compass baseplate scales, the paint tends to get worn off making them hard to read (keep your compass away from bug-dope covered hands, that stuff destroys plastic!).

A good scale ruler is better, and cheap, I prefer the 15cm C-Thru W43 transparent metric protractor/scale ruler. The 1:1000 scale can be read off directly in millimetres or can be used for 1:10000 topo sheets, and the 1:500 can be used for 1:50k topo sheets

I quite like the look of the ESEE scale cards and plan to pick up a set one of these days.
