Working on a new prototype, the W.U.R.Knife (Wilson Utility and Recreation Knife). Just about to wrap it up, so I thought I would post a few shots of the progress along the way, for those that are interested in how much work goes into handmade knives.

@DYSPHORIC JOY if this is too much thread derail, let me know at any time and I will start a different thread. Just thought this would make the most sense, to keep it all in one place, but I will happily move it if you prefer.

    Blade grinds roughed in.

Then the guard is rough-fitted so that I can begin the handle work, turning and milling etc.

Starting to look close to the image in my head now...

Next up, time to silver solder the guard in place. It is press fitted also, so the solder is there because I like it and it is an effective barrier against water/blood/whatever else, and not to cover up a poor guard fit. I also believe it is nice to show dedication/craftsmanship, as good silver soldering is not terribly common. So this is one way I let my customers know I am dedicated to my craft and quality in areas they can't see, also.

Here I have shaped the guard and the knife is basically complete, time to start on the leather sheath.

So out of that pile of leather comes this guy.

Just need to add a retention strap and it will be good to go.

I don't have a pic of the back of the sheath for online upload use, but on the prototype I used a "Lift-the-Dot" snap to hold the belt loop down at the bottom side. The idea being obviously so that the sheath can be removed from your belt without undoing your belt. I will likely not keep this feature moving forward unless it is special request and paid for, since it adds more time to the sheath build and this is not an expensive knife to begin with.

I need to make a new buttcap specifically for this knife. Going to keep it on the small side to keep weight down, just enough to knurl and get a grip on.

More work goes into these things than you might think, between knurling, turning to the correct diameters (both major and overall), cutting threads, tapping for the ferro rod insert, and milling out the bow drill divot. But it's one of my favorite parts. I get to make them just the way I want.

Now it's time to blast the knife. Almost done!

OK, time to wrap this one up. After getting blasted, just have to cord wrap the handle and sharpen it up. Very pleased with how it came out. Will do a few minor things differently on the next one, but stuff most people won't notice anyway.

And a closeup of the silver soldering, for those of you into that sort of thing.

    Thanks for looking.

Reminds me of the Explorer Night Raider from the 80s. One of my favorites from back then.
