Just found this thread. I just started making stuff. Carved my first spoon the other day and now to make some more see if I can make them better then the first. I’d like to be able to do it with the knives I carry. Any hints? And any wood that’s better then others! thanks for the help

If you're buying wood, basswood is an easier option to start with.

I'd imagine green is easier to fiddle around with.

thaks. That gave me some ideas. I guess I’ll just keep carving away till it works for me.
Was there some funky ass noise/music or whatever that was or is my phone just messed up?

Funky filler music. After splitting up a section of Walnut I looked at the pieces and let them dictate to me what was to be. Sometimes one just needs to let the wood speak to them and those are the ones that come out good.

Here's a little birch spoon I whipped up last year after someone posted a Ben Orford tutorial video on here. IMG_20190914_133856422_HDR-01.jpeg IMG_20190914_160641549_HDR-01.jpeg IMG_20190915_165903990-01.jpeg IMG_20190915_165917072-01.jpeg

This is currently in the works. It's a larger cedar "sauce" spoon. It's a lot easier to work than the birch was, almost too soft. It also wants to split in large slivers when I cut it parallel to the grain. After this I've got two partially shaped cups to finish. One birch and another walnut.
