Did this again with the 6, did it 3 times trying to get shots of "things on Fire." Tinder was Sagebrush Bark, Grass{ the kind found in a field} Milkweed Fluff. A bit harder with the shorter runway { spine} of this knife. Did it with both hands, being equally inept with both hands, it was only fair. Random shots..........
Not a full Fire, but spun a big ember with my off hand. (unfortunately all my good tinder is in the compost bin lol) Decided to go the friction fire route as I do it a lot. This is definitely a good chance to stretch myself. My friend Mike Lowe had demonstrated a similar method for me before so I decided to give it a go for this challenge. You basically use a bearing block just like bow drill, and weigh down the hearth with stones. (Essentially this is an oversized modified strap drill) Cordage is used as the spinning mechanism with a loop on each end for your feet to go thru. Cord is wrapped around the spindle 3-4 times and while holding the spindle vertically (bearing block on top end of the spindle and bottom in your divot on the hearth) you start pumping your feet back and forth. Takes a bit to get the rhythm correct (and all this was very frustrating using only one hand) but I got an ember. Friction fire one handed!
Ok...I admit he's not the only one to post trial run pictures.. Now we have to be more dramatic in our attempt.
Too true though! Had to "fan the flames" as it were. I know the crew here are a resourceful bunch, want to see some cool outside the box ideas. Have a few other one handed friction fire ideas, just hope to see some other crazy crafty ideas first!
Caleb O really set the bar on that one, nice work! Simple one handed Ferro Fire, bury saw, place tinder and drag Ferro.
Thanks, a Knife edge will also work but dulls the blade after a while. A sharpened spine would be better, but mine are all pretty beat up from flint and steel.
