As we climbed, the intensity of the mountain grew. We were both climbing up certain sections with our hands and legs because the terrain was so steep. @Bushman5 and I both stripped down our gear to bare essentials, however it was noted that for our AO, our regular load outs were ideal.

This area was incredible. @Bushman5 and I both agreed this was hardcore Sasquatch country.

It’s hard to describe how beautiful it is here. There are resources everywhere. Very very damp and wet conditions.

Under the moss is solid rock. There appears to be soil in certain areas, but it’s not that deep. Rock, rock and more rock.

The terrain is rugged, steep, and surprisingly the trail is well marked . Like Bro said, there is little soil up here , the tree roots go sideways instead of fanning out down into the soil. Less than 10" of soil.

step, move, stop, listen. Not a single sound in the thick air except for rain drops.

    IMG_7503.JPG

these boots were made for Long Range Recreational Pacing, and thats just we'll do!
    IMG_7504.JPG

little bogs like this were everywhere....they had more soil depth than the rest of the forest.

on and up, and UP IMG_7513.JPG

    BC's flower IMG_7520.JPG

another bog along the trail , filled with skunk cabbage IMG_7522.JPG IMG_7526.JPG

We paused after a fast entry into the trail, because the next section was a 100 meter gain scramble up a steep cliff section. Once rested for a minute , we hammered up the slippery trail and came out onto a little flat section of forest. That econo car sized rock was scraped there into position by the ice millions of years ago. We thought about rolling it and disturbing the fabric of time....... IMG_7538.JPG
one of a NINE large territory marking trees clawed/scratched by a very healthy cougar. VERY fresh scratching, fur rubbing and cat spray smell.
    IMG_7540.JPG

another half KM, we entered a downward sloping drainage, filled with basalt boulders (this whole area is basalt, among others) . Paused to obtain a location on the GPS. Lake still quite far off, and up a VERY steep boulder field (about another 500 meter gain thru very very rugged terrain. Because we wanted to have time for an epic cookout at the end of the day, we abandoned the goal of reaching the lake and struck out overland thru the forest.

yes this is a trail IMG_7544.JPG

this is more of the trail...... IMG_7545.JPG

More from me, Brother @Se7eN is on the highway with his Family, he will update more tonight.

after leaving the drainage boulder field, we left two blaze marks to mark our trail (for future trips) and scrambled up the wet, slipper moss coverd boulders and steep terrain.

one of many moments. We had to stop lots to take pics. The terrain and features were amazing.
    IMG_7547.JPG
big cat scat. More laughter from both of us as I called out "MEOW MEOW! where are you MEOW MEOW?"

    IMG_7549.JPG
the terrain here is really interesting, like wave after wave with shallow tiny valleys, you go up, you go down, you go up.

    IMG_7550.JPG
listening again. Complete dead silence. More laughter ensued as I broke the dead silence with "MEOW MEOW".

    IMG_7553.JPG IMG_7556.JPG IMG_7557.JPG

the lake is above and over that mountain peak. About another 3 hours of hard scrambling.

    IMG_7558 (1).JPG
every once in awhile, you would be stopped by a very steep drop off slippery moss covered bluffs.

    IMG_7559.JPG

TIME FOR LUNCH and brew up! we had pushed really hard and gained a lot of elevation up rough brutal terrain in a very short time.

    MKettle SAS Boiler boiling water.

    "Stabber"

    IMG_7568.JPG
we nommed on fine charcuterie and cheeses , drank coffee and just took in the views.

more giggles and hilarity ensued as we heard voices coming from the drainage (sound traveled really well up here). Sounded like 3 Chinese ladies hiking, chattering away and exclaiming loudly in Mandarin.

I let out a MASSIVE BELLOWING ROOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRRR! The hikers instantly stopped talking and went quiet, then you could hear them loudly and excitingly talking . They started banging rocks and cups and making an absolute racket. GO AWAY! GO AWAY! GO AWAY!

@Se7eN and I were red in the face trying not to let our laughter escape.

playing around with gear, i pulled out the signal panel. It actually hurt the eyes to look at it, after seeing nothing but green, grey, black, brown and more green for several hours.
    IMG_7570.JPG

*** @Se7eN will have trip report and photos from this section of the bluff as well - stay tuned!

we packed up the lunch gear and headed up another bluff.

    IMG_7574.JPG

    cool patterns on the moss

    IMG_7576.JPG

    down to another bluff.
    IMG_7577.JPG

We ended up dead ending at drop offs, so we turned and beelined for the main trail, about 400' away. Got back down to the trail and hammered back to the truck. Did not take many pics on the way down due to the need to have all four limbs in use to maintain traction.

Got back to the truck in record time, just hammering. Stowed the gear , turned the key and CLICK. "misfire"! more giggles.

got out the old battery and jumpers and boosted the engine. Rrrrrrr-uuuuuuuuurgh-rrrrrr Vroom! and down we went.

hey what the lack of brake? more laughter.....worst case I'll chain a log to the rear recovery point and drag brake us down in 4lo-lo,

tested the brakes a few times and they worked ok. Enough for the rest of the day.

driving down and off to another spur road to explore more in the 4x4

We descended down to the HWY and took off for yet another adventure!

more from @Se7eN and I soon!

Throughout the trip, @Bushman5 and I had each other howling with laugher. We reviewed gear and compares load outs. I was able to see some gaps in my own kit after looking at @Bushman5 ’s load out.

He knows his stuff. It bet on him to win alone for sure.

We both wanted to cut this down and haul it back to the bushtracker to make some cool stuff out of but it would have weighed a few hundred pounds for sure. Next time. Mission specific task.

More to come. Bushy touched on when he roared at the tourists, but wait till you hear it from my point of view. I’ve never been so close to having an aneurism from trying so hard not to laugh lmfao.

The epicness continues! Pour yourselves a pint lads, it gets better!!!

    GEAR NOTE!

this PHOTO here , im wearing the PERSEVERANCE SURVIVAL "Woobie Hoody" , nothing underneath, with a thin cloth vest overtop.

It was pouring rain, I was soaked, YET i was way too hot temp wise. I was pretty amazed at how cool and wet it was but how warm i stayed. Even when stopping for lunch for an hour. It dried quickly with body heat once the rain stopped and when we started moving down the bluffs I took it off and stowed it, it was 90%dry, just patches of damp.

Skunk cabbage was prevalent anywhere there was a lot of moisture. Bears love this stuff.

That ancient logging road had been very recently surveyed and flagged, it looks like they are going to selectively log this area. Looking on ggole earth at home it appears the FSR where we parked, had kept going up and led right to that spot where @Se7eN took the picture. I'm guessing early 50's this area was logged.

Part of the crazy boulder field we were hiking up. Not far after this we decided to move up into a ridge and gather some intel of our location in relation to the lake.

Some of these boulders were as big as cars.

Go, stop, listen, repeat. @Bushman5 and I discussed how we naturally seem to “notice things”. The way we creep through the bush is key to this. Take your time, scan the area deep into the bush. Listen. Move.

Chow time. As @Bushman5 said, we were eating like kings when we heard a Royo is peasants moving up the boulder field. As I laughed quietly, I told bushy that I used to let out a deep guttural growl to scare people that were blazing through the sticks like idiots. Keeps them on their toes.

I wasn’t even done telling the story when @Bushman5 stopped laughing suddenly and with a straight face let out the most horrific growl I have ever heard in my damn life.

Silence ensued, then panicked chatter and rocks being smashed together to make noise.

We were absolutely dying of laughter, but both red in the face trying not to make noise. Absolutely hilarious, fall on the floor funny.

As I watched @Bushman5 boil water effortlessly in his SAS kettle, I built a standard fire and boiled water for pine needle tea. We both shared stories and dried off by the fire while taking in the view.

More of this incredible day awaited us.

im still giggling every time I think of when you were just standing there in the silence, listening to the woods. And then I let out a MEOW MEOW! the frikking look on your face as you were laughing was hilarious. I thought you were going to fall down the bank as result.....hahahahaha

We noticed the Chinese endurance hikers had parked almost down by the HWY. HOLY CRAP!!!!!!! they had hiked up the steep logging road to the trail head, adding an extra 12 KM to their already LONG hike. Major props to them!

its kinda neat here in BC, we see many cultural groups in the great outdoors. A lot unprepared, but the majority very fit and prepared. On the drive back to the Hotel, we saw an entire family of Sikhs, from 100 year old grandma to toddlers, all in several rented Suburban limos , just taking in the views of the glaciers, and later i saw them at the Chief on the way home.

    more trip report!

We got back to the HWY, broken tailpipe, 2% brakes and all and ripped down to another awesome spot......the little cabin!
