Tried the magnet. Did not stick. My bad. Didn’t mean to mislead. It has an enamel coating of some kind. Did find one at my resort in Estes Park though.

Our first trip, and it has been spectacular. Only issue is there has been like 2 feet of snow dumped Sunday and the best scenic roads are closed. Hoping it clears before we leave!

My favorite place in the entire world is Odessa Lake, which you get there by the Bear Lake Trailhead. We hiked in from Bear Lake to Odessa and stayed 2 nights. From Odessa we hiked down past Fern Lake and on to Spruce Lake. We stayed 2 nights at Spruce then hiked out to the Fern Lake Trailhead.

That sounds awesome! That uphill half mile climb coming back up from Alberta Falls was all I wanted. Lol.

    I bet
The name alone sounds brutal! I’m getting in better shape here lately, but this CO air is awful thin in these Tennessee lungs!

Does anyone know of a trick to stop the enamel coating from chipping and flaking with being pumped around?

Unfortunately thats one of the things you've gotta be aware of with enamelware. A high quality piece will be more durable and resist flaking and chipping, but if you smack em around like you would an uncoated steel or otherwise metal cup you run the risk of borking up the coating. I've seen enamelware that was the better part of half a century old and looked like hell along the bottom edge where the coating chipped off over the years, but the majority was still intact; I've also seen enamelware that was still fairly new that had the coating flake off in big old chunks. If you want a cup you can beat on, consider a titanium or plain steel cup- my campfire cup is plain, uncoated steel with the look of enamelware minus the coating. Cheap, relatively light, durable as all get out.

I haven’t really been abusing them thou. I think it might be a cheap cup issue.... I keep them stored in my cupboard and I know I don’t smash them. But no guarantees what the kiddos do to them I guess...

I've never had good luck with the cheap enamelware cups. Those things have such thin and fragile coatings they're almost getting messed up by the time I get em home. A decent quality cup definitely can help imo.

What's the great interest in enameled mugs?

That ceramic one is surely coated in a typical ceramic glaze.

I'd expect any thin metal mug to flex when heated, cooled, and bashed around, causing the more brittle enamel coating to crack and chip eventually.

A good quality enameled steel mug is surprisingly sturdy. I've got a few at home that are older than me and have spent countless nights in the woods.

    Plus they look cool.
