I took this picture with my I phone through my binoculars.

    Pretty epic.

My gransfors bruks splitting maul was in overdrive. If you think an axe is important, try using a splitting maul to process 28 inch wood.

This trip eventually transitioned further south to one of my favourite river systems. The mighty river was high and fast. If you fall in, you’re dead.

This area was prime, prime grizzly bear country.

    I was on edge.

    This country is gorgeous.

I saw a nice vantage point and worked my way up to it. It was worth it.

I hiked further down until I could see the river. Swollen with spring run off. This river is deadly.

    Canoe adventure with bear encounter.

Woke up early and loaded my canoe on to my truck and bleed out of town to my favourite river system north of town. Water levels are still high, but it was set to be a great trip.

    A79AF636-267B-4A13-AD38-E4C848143F8B.jpeg

The embankment I had to take the canoe down is a lot steeper than it looks!

    4A6040CD-4288-46F4-8F4E-338CCC5E3289.jpeg

Loaded the canoe up with my Maxpesition falcon II, HPG kit, some basic fishing gear, my giant yeti tumbler full of fresh spring water and my gun.

This section of the river moves SLOW. Easy paddling.

As usual, the rainbows were really active. I caught several nice ones. I let them all go.

Canoeing is absolutely one of my favourite things to do. Relaxing, fun and you can access some really cool areas.

It’s funny how over the years, things will grow on partially submerged logs. Check this out.

I’ve been prospecting for a good area to build a base camp equipped with a log fence and heavy duty lean to for overnighters.

    938FE705-B7B8-4056-A489-28D3F90844A6.jpeg

    Lots of good areas here.

Back on shore. I paddled for 6 hours today. Not including all of the fishing and exploring I did.

I was beat. Noticed all of these carpenter ants on this old stump. Perfect bear food.

This was ironic because before I landed on shore, I waited about 50-60 feet out from shore listening for wild animals. Thought for sure I heard a bear, but I couldn’t see anything and the noise went away. I did this for 15 minutes before landing my canoe. I carried the canoe up the steep embankment and came down to grab my gun and HPG butt pack. That’s when I took these pictures.

    622C7EFB-D135-49F5-95F1-50646AB5AD45.jpeg

I had just put my gear on when out of nowhere, a bear woofed at me and charged from the tree line in front of me. I could hear it smashing through the underbrush but couldn’t see it.

I immediately chambered a round and took a knee, ready to make a close range shot. The bear stopped ( I was yelling at it). And took off. Never did see it.. not sure if it was a grizzly and the woof was very deep sounding. I carefully climbed up the embankment, gun in hand and walked back 100 yards to my truck. I set off my truck alarm on my way to make more noise.

I got to the truck and got in. Had some water and waited there for 20 or 30 minutes.

    Didn’t see anything.

Drove up to my canoe and loaded it up. My gun wasn’t far away.

Once I was done strapping up my canoe, I jumped out of the box and went to get in the truck.

F***ing huge sow black bear had just trees her single cub and was staring me down.

I took this picture through my truck windshield , so pardon the blurry photo, but you can see how big she is. She was pacing back and fourth, obviously nervous.

    E89796F7-6F8C-4FA2-AF36-A2AEB949717B.jpeg

I started up my truck and drove ahead, she ran up the hill and then back down again charging me in the truck. This bear was nuts.

Honking my horn, she finally went up the hill 10 or 15 yards and watched me. I could see her cub way up in a spruce tree.

I managed to get this shot of the sow, she was pissed.

    78298738-E3F0-44A4-A298-458179EB14E5.jpeg

I’ve been charged by beare before. Many times. This one was the closest call I’ve had other than a run in with a big male grizzly a few years ago.

If you are in bear country, be extra careful this time of year. Be prepared. In the situation I was in, I might have been able to make one clean shot if that sow came into view when she charged me..not two, not 3, one..

What a wicked day. I went home and smashed a few reebs while looking at the picture of the bear.

I love how wild this place is.

Not legal in Canada to carry a handgun and not much point to carrying a shotgun and the ruger.

    That 375 is a mean b*tch.

Mine has a muzzle break, so it reduces recoil like you wouldn’t believe.

I hunt with a 340 Weatherby. That thing has some jam.

This 375 ruger will plant anything that walks this earth.

Yea I’ve been thinking it’s time I put a triple rifle mag shingle on my L.R.R.P.R. webbing, just to have a few extra (225 gram) cans of bearspray on tap.

Esp since I have been mostly hiking in the Brandywine, Callahan areas of Whistler .
