So today I break out my new ESEE 6 one of many I’ve had and used to cut down some small trees and nuisance plant life around my house. These small trees were less than the diameter of my pinky and were green and soft. After a few chops here a few push cuts there the trees and weeds were done for. I get inside and I’m getting ready to clean my ESEE 6 up and notice very small micro chips and quite a few spots where the edge had rolled my fingernail will catch a bur on one side. These rolls were not there when I got it. I didn’t hit any rocks or ground all soft green wood. I’ve owned and used a few 6’s in my day for much tougher tasks than this and no damage at all. I can get it all out with a few swipes on my ceramic rods and strop but I guess I was just surprised to see them since it was so lightly used. Anyone else see this on their 6? Did I happen to get the fluke with a not so perfect heat treat unlike I’m used to with these blades? I’ve used my Junglas and Junglas 2 much harder and nothing! I’ve batoned my 5 through some extremely tough wood at least 4” in diameter and no damage at all. Any comments would be appreciated!

Was this in a sandy area, or place that has really tiny rocks? I had similar issues with other knives, when batoning wood from these types of terrain. Little bits of rocks/sand can be embedded in things you don't notice.

No not at all. It was in an area completely covered in mulch or grass. And these small trees were very small and still alive and standing.

That's a weird one. Factory edge on it still?

@Kevo I thought about that too. Sometimes a knifes factory edge is somehow softer than when it has been sharpened a few times. Maybe something like de-carburization of the thin edge when heat treating, that can be ground off?

I’ve heard that also so I’m hoping that’s what it is.

If the chips were small enough to knock off with a couple swipes on a ceramic, then it very well may just be a little burr that was left over from grinding. My RB3 came to me with visible micro serrations that needed removing out of the box.

Thank you @Jeff Randall I'm very appreciative of that! How do I go about sending it back? I’ve never had to use the warranty.

Be sure to note on the page that I want it replaced, not repaired. I don't want to take a chance on there being a heat treat issues with this knife since it is both chipping and edge rolling. Appears soft and hard to me.

@Jeff Randall when you said to note on the page that “I want it replaced not repaired” did you mean to note that you want it replaced or to note that I myself want it replaced? I’ve already filled out the page and got my email to send it in but after reading this again I wasn’t quite sure. Thank you.

I guess we all deal with things differently. I would just sharpen it and get on with life.

Be to much hassle to package it up, go to the post office, wait in line, send it, then wait for it to return.

Aint a thing wrong with using the warranty when there may be an issue. Makes sense to me.
