I'd like to be able to make, mod, and quickly sharpen my own knives. I really don't think I'll sell many because I don't have the time and really don't need extra money, but I want to have some good equipment. I'm not looking for a cheap grinder, but something like a KMG. Any recommendations? Anyone have one for sale? Anything to watch out for? Thanks in advance.
if you're at all handy with tools, check out Oregon Blade Maker on ePrey he does a bare bones kit under $500 - just add motor and belts.
I have an Oregon blade maker grinder with flat platen and also an 8" hollow grind wheel. My variable speed motor and controller came from dealer's electric. Took a bit to get it all setup. There are some used ones for sale of the blade forums for sale section right now.
The pheer454 with 8" contact wheel and platen is looking like a pretty nice machine. Just under 2K shipped for the 220v variable. http://m.2x72beltgrinder.com/PH-454--belt-grinder.html
WEN 6502 Belt is one of the best knife grinders. If you need a reliable and versatile belt knife sander, then this tool is perfect for you. You can tilt the adjustable belt from o-degree to 90-degree. It has an 80-grit sanding belt and an 80-grit sanding disc. It comes with a tension release lever which helps you to change the sandpaper grits quickly & easily.
