okay I keep going back and forth on the Tarahumara pack. If it came in rescue orange it would be a debate. Anyone have some good action shots of it or examples of loadout. I’m searching the internet but figured I would ask here too

Check out my rambles thread, I used my Tara most of 2018 and absolutely love it. I'd really like to pick up another in a darker color (ranger). Great pack, absolutely love it. So much so that I'm having a hard time leaving it behind for my brand new Umlindi.

I think I might've gone over load outs in that thread, but if not, I'd be happy to compile a post about it for you.

It carries a days worth of gear perfectly. I do recommend using a reusable space blanket as a bit of padding on the back, keeps some of the harder items from poking your back, plus you get an awesome shelter/sitting pad/kneeling bad/emergency litter/signaling panel etc.

Awesome thank you! I’ll check it out. Well my kit is on my Sherpa belt system. My pack is just my food and my sleeping stuff. I think I can make the Tarahumara work. I like it because it can hook onto my current set up.

Depending on what you use for sleeping gear, you might want the extra capacity of the Umlindi. It's not a very much larger footprint, but it doesn't taper towards the top allowing for a lot more "poof" to be packed into it. The top opening also really allows you to compress poofy sleeping stuff down into the pack without worrying about the front zipper catching anything.

Interesting. Right now I’m on a hidden woodsman rucksack and two sets of straps just aren’t cutting it lol what I liked about the Tarahumara was the fact that it attaches with the two little loops. I can use grim locks and make it attach to my current harness with no extra straps.

If it's in your budget, I would highly recommend sticking with the HPG harness on the Tara (or any other pack) - imo, it's truly one of the things that makes their packs so awesome.

And I would agree with Reno that if you're carrying overnight stuff, you might want to consider the Umlindi, unless you are going really minimal and light.

I have the Tara and the Umlindi and love them both for different reasons, but I generally think of the Tara as my go-to day pack. The Umlindi is for the rare occasion I need a day pack with more capacity than the Tara, and is my go-to for 2-3 day trips. It also mates to the HPG belts (the Tara doesn't), which really transforms the load-bearing capacity of the pack.

Thanks. I have heard good things on the harness but I love my current Sherpa rig so much I can’t go without it. I’m wanting to integrate with it. If that makes sense. Right now the hidden woodsman day Rick holds all I need I just don’t like double straps

I’m with hammer. The harness makes the HPG standout. Without the harness, they could be just any other pack.

Tara’s are small but that’s what makes them great. You can stuff it with lead and the harness makes it disappear. I wear one a lot and often forget I have it on. It’s also capable of strapping other pouches onto it. I strap a folding lawn chair to it during hunting season. I can’t imagjne finding a better pack in the Tara size range.

If you go with the Tara, I'd highly recommend getting the Tuff Possum pouch for it as well.

I’ve had a lot of packs. Two that I deeply regret selling are the Tara and Umlindi. As everybody has mentioned, the Tara just disappears on your back. I think it is too small for an overnighted unless it’s a warm summer night. But for a day hike it’s great. The center zipper makes it a great edc bag with a little added organization.
