Post your upcoming plans for formal training here (and hopefully this encourages more people to do so...). In the coming months, I'll be: Training to upgrade to an 'Enhanced' CCW √ Doing a 2-Day Tactical Handgun class with Ernest Langdon √ Structured practice with specific drills at the range at least once a week. √ Wilderness First Aid (20 hr. course) Also planning on doing IDPA on a somewhat regular basis this winter. What are your plans for keeping your skills sharp and improving?
Personally, I've had a desire to burn some powder again...I have gotten OUT of the habit of shooting regularly and I've sone some shooting in the last few weeks and it's felt great. Nothing formal.....just an attempt to make sure I stay sharp. 4 years ago I was shooting a LOT of IDPA and Steel Challenge matches and I can't believe the degradation of my eyesight over these last 4 years....
Short term goals/plans: -I'm going to start shooting USPSA again next month. I did it a few times in the past before my schedule got in the way. -Trying out a few local training groups. My past experiences with these weren't positive, but I've had two recommended to me that seem like they will be solid, if I can make the commute work. -Get back to shooting at least once a week, I've been letting unnecessary stuff interfere with that. Sleep isn't really necessary, right? Goals for 2019: -At least six major classes for the year. Including, hopefully: 1.A class with Gabe White. 2.William Aprill's Unthinkable class. 3.A shotgun class. 4.Something long range related. I also want to dedicate some time to trying out an RMR.
I'll be headed out to Sheridan to do some handgun training next month @ Triggerfarm. I'm pretty excited about that one! I had to get my training hours up to be able to qualify for the advanced class. The reward is getting to do some more dynamic drills and working in/around vehicles. Next spring myself, my girlfriend, and her sister are all headed to Front Sight in Nevada for a weekend of training. I'm really itching to take a carbine class, but am still looking at options, trainers, curriculum.
Attended a one-day pistol course with John "Shrek" McPhee on 09/14. It was phenomenal. November 10/11 I'll be training with him again in NC. I highly recommend training with John if you get the chance.
While polarizing, I've got several friends that have taken a number of his classes and had nothing but the highest praise for his and his instructors teaching!
That's awesome to hear! It also seems like the general consensus from people who've gone to his classes. I'm really tempted to try out fighting pistol, and eventually fighting rifle, over there in Camden. He's got some reasonable rates for his classes.
I have heard from a number of trusted friends that his fighting pistol class is among the best classes they've ever taken. Yeager himself will tell you that his instructors are better teachers than HE is so I don't see the necessity to pay extra for a class from him...(I've spoken to him personally several times about his classes at Blade and SHOT show) While there are some haters out there I have spoken to people that have actually TAKEN a class and to a man, they all left impressed!
The internet commandos can often be way louder than the guys that actually go out and get it done. I haven't signed up for Front Sight yet, which was the plan this spring. I'm starting to think a ride to TN would be a much better option for me.
James Yeager is the best firearms instructor I’ve trained with and I’ve trained with a bunch. There seem to be some other instructors out there now willing to speak up against the sacred cows. Stuff like grip matters in marksmanship. Crap like that. But 15 years ago, Yeager was pretty much the only voice in the wilderness not regurgitating the tired old myths. Frankly, I think we could do away with all handgun training except for Fighting Pistol every other year and a solid force on force class every year. Along with your own practice during the year, that would suffice. In fact, I’m not sure you could improve on that. Perhaps throw in some medical course in case you get shot but now you are moving away from pure firearms training.
Just completed a two-day tactical handgun course with Ernest Langdon. Demanding, humbling, kicked my ass and I learned a ton. √
https://sentinelconcepts.com/event/shooting-on-the-move-handgun-carbine/ Going to try this course in May. It will be my third with Sentinel Concepts. The course coming to Iowa has a lot to do with my selection especially since I can drive to it each day and save the cost of hotels and restaurants.
Just started doing uspsa! Don’t know why I didn’t start this forever ago. Can wait for idpa to start also. Here is my setup on my normal edc belt. I’m return the one I got I didn’t like the setup
I've been doing this stuff so long that there's no hope of improvement. I can't shoot enough to accomplish that. I just try to keep the CCW bill drill under 2.0 seconds. I can normally do so with the commander 9mm, after a couple of warmup runs, altho not all of the shots stay i the A zone.
