another great turnout for bikejc (yearly bike festival here in jersey city where they close major streets down, police escorts blocking intersections, etc. so 1k or so bikers get to group ride through the city's major areas for about 16 miles/2 hours to promote bike riding and awareness).

    started at city hall.

...ended in financial district with nyc in the background.

I've had a hiatus (job change) but I'm ready to get back on the bike...specifically the MTB.....I've grown up riding....working, building and ultimately owning a bike shop for a while...I've been a custom wheel builder for nearly 1/2 my life span.....Ive raced both MTB, road, and endurance MTB (generally 12-48hrs, often solo)

I love bikes....and riding and the people I ride with....now that I don't own a bike shop anymore I keep my riding circle small and close....like it used to be....I've got about 15lbs that have crept up on me and am working on a Dad bod right now that needs to be remedied....I need to get back on Trusty Rusty (my steel, rigid single speed) and get to work in the pain cave...

After a long run with Goruck events im finally getting back on the road bike. Looks like all my sweet gear is old, broken and useless. Going to get a new helmet and shoes today. Looking forward to the rhythmic hum of the tires.

Anyone have road bike shoe/helmet suggestions?

Got out and rode 30 last night with some old friends..... as for helmets, Less is MORE....I'm a helmet snob so I like light weight and highly breathable so it will be costly.....but you can ask yourself how much is your head worth.

As for shoes, carbon only....Sidi used to rule the day but they are SUPER expensive and there are other great options out there....trolling the internet you can find some great deals on Carbon soled shoes....just make sure you get them from a place that allows you to return them if they don't fit....

A note about cycling shoes.....size varies greatly from brand to brand....I wear a size 44-45.5 depending on the brand. I have Bontrager Mtn and Road shoes now and like them. I've always been a fan of Specialized stuff as well...

@shaneadams90 That campy bike is soooooo dreamy.

Went to a local shop and picked what they had their. Love to support the local scene. Ended up with Pearl Izumi shoes and a Giant helmet.

Took a spin around the block last night and easily got 4 miles with a 14 average. Not bad for first ride and taking it easy.

@Mountainmistwanderer I wear the whole get up. Makes me fast and honestly its way more comfortable.

question for the 20MM THRU AXLE hub mountain bikers......

Hypothetically, could a guy take these hubs, and slide them onto a 20mm OD aluminum or tool steel axle rod and secure the hub in place with locking collars?

    like this:

    locking collar>>>>>HUB<<<<<<locking collar.....METAL ROD/cart platform.......locking collar>>>>HUB<<<<<<<locking collar

thinking about a pair of 20mm thru axle hub mountain bike wheels and a 20mm aircraft grade aluminum rod.......for the trekking cart build..........

it would seriously simplify the wheel mounting, and reduce the cost of the cart by almost $500.

If I'm understanding you correctly then the answer is yes. As long as you don't squeeze the collars into the hub too much thus causing them to seize up.

On my bike the fork is basically what your locking collars would be in place of so I don't see a difference.

Id be sliding on UHMW washers in between the locking collar and the hub bearing face. A very minute amount of free play

20180802_180235.jpg Fresh from the shop! 2018 Surly Ogre, got two salsa HD anything cages on there and a light, ready for some long distance FS road cruising once I get my clipless pedals on. Eventually I'll get a rear rack and get some multi day excursions in!

Got the surly rear rack, some ortlieb panniers and a brooks on there. Loving this bike, took this pic about halfway through a 50 mile overnight ride. Really liking bikepacking, cover longer distances faster, and carry more beer/food/gear for camp comfort with out having weight on your back!
