For the month of July lets focus on fire. What id like us to do is focus on a fire skill we are not comfortable with. If you have mastered ferro rod id like you to move on to bowdrill or flint and steel. If you are a master of the bow drill then try hand drill or fire plow. Post some picture of successes, failures, and feel free to discuss or help each other out. For me I'm going to try and get a hand drill fire this month with whatever i can find laying around.
Umm more than my heart is a pyro... lol I want to work now drill for this... what is a fire plow? Is it where you hook your donkey up to the plow then light him on fire so he plows faster? But seriously what is the fire plow?
Hard wood "spindle" in a grooved softer board where you move the spindle back and forth in the groove and the end catches dust and ember. Its a workout like no other.
I think maybe I’ve seen it but never knew the name. Sounds much harder than the bow drill as it’s not a micro focused point of friction. If you have those materials ready why would you pick the plow over the bow?
If you didnt have a viable cordage or a proper hand drill... or you are insanely strong and have great cardio. Its super hard for me to even get brown dust.
Gotcha... no matter what I have my ESEE firesteel on a paracord necklace but if I lost that this would be a good technique. Thank you for explaining!
If the fire is for purifying water, then it would be a problem. If the fire you were trying to make is for heat, that it sounds like this technique is a win-win LOL
I will try a Bamboo Fire Saw again, last time was a failure......... Have to get it at Hobby Lobby as it is not Native to the PNW. I had to wedge it do to it being so small of a diameter. Thanks for the "shove" to try it again......
8 days in a cabin coming up. I’ve lost my touch with a ferro rod. Too many years relying on UCO storm matches. Time to dig out a ferro rod.
Modified Hand Drill. Made today, worked out great............. Still working up courage for the Bamboo saw.
Figured this would be a good segue from last months' theme - water into fire. Required gear - clear plastic water bottle and some paper with black/dark printing on it: Adjust the bottle angle until it's focused and as white-hot as possible, you should have smoke within seconds: Once you have a smoldering circle about the size of a quarter, fold a few more pieces of paper loosely over it, and wave it around until it catches: And there you have it.
