So this was the "gear roll" today. Schemagh, steel water bottle, protein bar, fire kit, paracord, gourd foraging container, and knife. I had other items in my pockets, and my main kit was never more than a couple miles away. But this was the scout around items. IMG_2887.JPG

Well done, nice way to use a shemagh, what a multi use piece of kit. So we have a pony that isn’t nice to the other horses. Today I was cleaning his water trough and he got out the gate into the paddock with the other horses. I had my coyote shemagh on so I uses it as a halter and lead rope to catch him and put him back. The little misses said that was good thinking, she has given me a hard time about my shemaghs for years, I looked at her and said I told you it was a multi use piece of kit... lol

Ah, that brings back memories. I did my dissertation (PhD stuff) on yucca and its pollinator (yucca moth) back in the 80s just south of ABQ NM by 60 mi.

I lived out of the back of my pickup in open desert for seven summers on a wildlife refuge for pronghorn antelope (permitted; one of the few with access to a quarter million acres of a wildlife refuge straddling the Rio Grande: Sevilleta NWR).

I remember one late July/early August day when the temps went way high. Best shade on my study plot at 16:00 was under a mesquite on the north side of it. I just crawled under my Ford pickup -- which offered the only dense shade for five miles -- and took a nap until around 18:00.

What an amazing plant. Not to mention the symbiosis its part of. Pics later IICR (if I can remember).

While I'm thinking of it. Here's my truck camp on my study plot.

The mountains in the distance (five mi east) are the Los Pinos, south of the Manzanos, south of the Sandias (on the east side of ABQ). Totally dry on the western side of the escarpment except for one spring just south of the big crack system to the right. I found several mule deer and antelope carcasses up near the spring. Mt Lion kill.

It's so interesting that even though I now live in N Maine on the way to the Scottish highlands,
those desert days helped shape who I am so strongly.

Just something about hot and dry, which is where schemagh was born, I think.

Can't wait to see what other folks will carry in theirs. I'm sure for someone's local they would choose to carry different stuff.

Truly is something about the desert. Feel like it's shaping me on a continual basis.

In deserts, we either be shape shifters, or we die.

At least that's what they felt like to me.
    Chihuahua, Sonora, Mojave, Great Basin.

I learned how to deal with hot and dry,
and that's helped me deal with cold and ice.

While walking in the 100 acres south of my studio this afternoon (5 hours),
and wearing one of my schemaghs, I took this photo.

It's a glacial erratic, probably from just north of here (near Mt Katahdin).

It's March 25, but there's still 20" of snow around it.
Temps were in the 30's F, but winds to 25 carried a teens chill.

Thanks! Always figure if it's getting liked on there it would probably be appreciated by others as well. :)
