I hear y’all, I went yesterday and harvested some apple wood to do some spoons over the holiday. You know people pay good money for these things.

The hook knife speeds things up a bit, until you add something else to slow you down. #4....

If anyone here goes to Joanne Fabrics.... I found they carry this book for $24. With their 50% off coupon on their website that brings it down to $12!

The Art of Spoon Carving by Lora Irish. This is the September 2017 version I believe!

Initial impression is there is a focus on very artistic spoons.. BUT ALOT of good information and how to crammed in between all that :)

Does the book focus on hand carving? I downloaded a book to my kindle a few years back but it’s all about power tools and fancy design. I’ve made a few spoons but would like a little knowledge on doing it better. They were bad enough they became kindling. Anyway I did buy a spoon hook knife but haven’t try carving again yet..,

SO i just looked through the whole book and i would DEF recommend it for intro spoon carving. Yes there are some artsy fartsy type spoon designs covered BUT you just can just stop before you get there and have a nice spoon with out it.
While the book assumes you are starting from a wood blank and recommends roughing out with different types of saws. This step can easily be ignored if starting with smaller and closer shaped pieces of wood.
It covers close to 10 different tools and how they are used on different portions of the spoon. It takes you step by step through making a number of different spoons by hand and even includes actual size diagrams and drawing in the back of the book for you to use.
They seems to like one particular tool that i will post a picture of BUT i am pretty sure a pocket knife could easily to used instead.

    Hope that helps :)

Wow You guys! I have never, ever, made, anything remotely close to this nice of a spoon. I have made a few expedient spatula looking things that you could shovel food in your mouth with. You cats are impressive. :)
