WE tried to get creative... Back at the last Bushcraft class James Gibson showed us the Fire Roll method of primitive fire...we used 2x4 cut offs and some ash straight from the fire and EASY peasy we had FIRE.... So today @Patrick Rollins and I set out to do it with harvested supplies....and...we FAILED! Check out the Video below and be sure to watch the end....I dropped some out takes in there! We are going to have another go at it later this week after we refine a few things...
That’s why I keep one in my bag. I was tempted to start a fire with it, but I don’t think the neighbors would be too happy.
Ive never seen a bushcraft master publish a failure (maybe so but ive not seen it). This is truly the way things go. Nothing is 100%. Thanks Shane and Patrick for showing real life and not the magical.
it's the way it should be....no one masters anything without failure (thus practice).....Patrick and I both discussed what we should do with the video and to his credit @Patrick Rollins agreed that we should put it out there.... The truth is I know we were both confident that we would get fire....to me it was a foregone conclusion.....and I got humbled....Mother Nature is cool that way.
Izzysquatch. I saw her/him in the video at one point. Pretty dog. That bone pendant around Patrick's neck would be suspect with a dog that close by! Thanks for sharing the failure. I have failed many times trying new fire methods...and probably as many times trying previously successful methods.
It sure is....Patrick has one and I do too...very useful...it goes into the woods with me and my CR2.5 every time I go...
The Pendant is a Viking Whetstone from Wazoo Survival Gear...it's a sharpener you wear around your neck...very useful! https://www.wazoosurvivalgear.com/viking-whetstone-pendant-version-2/
Not gonna lie the PR4 is in my opinion the greatest knife ever. When I was on Bushcraft Usa I defended it and how the scales would feel great, I was right. I even created an ESEE sub forum there to show my love for it... the CR2.5 looks great but it’s not the PR4... its simple math 4 > 2.5... Just had to pick on you a little @shaneadams90
I'm triggered.... The PR4 is awesome...I just find that I don't NEED a big knife for probably 90% of my cutting task...on the drift boat, hiking, processing game (a big knife can actually be a liability).....I've been a fan of big knives for EVER....but I chose to use the knife I have on me and I am rarely wanting for a LARGER blade.... In fact, my last few outings I've challenged myself a bit...I've carried the CR2.5 and the GransFors Bruks Wildlife axe and NO OTHER knives...(well a SAK)....but no "larger blade" camp knife...I haven't missed it.. I've learned to use my Axe in a more versatile way and it compliments the CR2.5.... But when I field a larger knife it is the PR4 prototype I got from James Gibson...
That knife is art work. I agree with you on the axe idea I’m glad one is hitting the lineup. When I go for a small knife I grab my izula II I have loved it for years. I appreciate the small knife concept, I’ve never understood the big knives, I just don’t use them. I sold my Junglas and cm6 for that reason and got the laser strike followed by the PR4. Like I said just wanted to give you a hard time, everyone else does
I've been an Izula fan for a long time....I never use them after the CR2.5....I just really like that blade in case you haven't noticed...lol... I'm a gear nut...but I'm trying to fight my inner gear-ho and pair stuff down....there is a fine line between preparedness and TOO MUCH.... So I have a good friend that I once asked at a Survival Intensive class where he was 4 days in and starving: "Why do this to yourself?" His response resonated with me: "I'm a collector of knowledge and skills.."....... @Strigidae It caused me to think....it really struck me that I rely too much on my gear and not enough on my skill (which is under developed)....so I'm working on it....and the only way to do is to strip it down.....I hope to go to the jungle this year...I've already committed to carrying a SAK and my CR2.5. We will grab machetes down there....but I don't want to carry any other knives....that should do it...and I like to challenge myself.
