He's growing up into an awesome young man DJ! I really enjoyed his video interviews with James Gibson.

Thanks. You haven’t done too bad yourself. Hope all is well on the home front. Really looking forward to your upcoming herping adventures and maybe some vintage deer camp
    stories.

Thanks! I couldn't be more proud of mine, he's a good kid and will be 18 come September.

I've been in new baby mode lately, but we're planning to get my son mid March on his spring break and take him and the baby to the deer camp. Hopefully he and I can finally catch an eastern hognose and not just get a quick glimpse.

Good to see you spend so much time with your son. I was much the same way. It sure goes by fast. He's 30 now, and lives in Colorado. I don't get to see him much anymore.

We don’t get much play time especially now that he turned 12 and is big enough to really help out on the farm. He has been drawing knife designs since around 4. If he burns through all the lawnmower blades I saved over the years, he can start fooling with some predictable steel. All his interests are nerve racking to say the least. Sometimes I wish he had video games and watched TV more.

He is not allowed to finish it due to safety reasons for the next stage of competition but should be done by then along with a file necker. May do red oak scales.

He has been reading about guesstimates on kitchen oven temper just to try and prove me wrong about lawnmower blades. Good throwers but steel is difficult to dial in IMO. I don’t know squat about knife making though.

@erik I am trying to modify my old Craftsman sander. Made a platen out of ceramic but haven’t fixed it yet. He had been using a file on the other projects. Let me know ahead of time and will get down to see y’all and pick up some pointers.

I used JB weld to attach the ceramic to the platen on my Craftsman 2x42.
yes, it's hard to dial in, because some "homeowner grade" mower blades are low carbon.
also - tempering at 425-450 has worked pretty well for the mower blade parangs I've done.
I do 3 temper cycles: heat for an hour, dunk in room temp water for 30 seconds, dry it off and repeat twice more.

one way to test your steel is to take several pieces from the same mower blade roughly 1" x 3", heat and quench them all.
file test -- if it skates, they're hard.
break one and check the grain structure.
if it's homogenous (pale gray with no visible grain structure, you're getting it hot enough AND quenching it fast enough)
mark each remaining piece, then give each a different tempering heat.
for example: 350, 400, 450, 500, 550 (350 should still be too hard, 550 should be too soft)
test each with a file to see how easy they cut
chuck each into a vice and see if it breaks, flexes, or bends. (hint, flexing is good)
vise jaw w/2 bolts, blade, vise jaw w/1 bolt -- start cranking until it flexes/breaks.
