For sure! About the only use I've found for sweet gum is chewing on the leaf stems for the winter green taste and hinge-cutting them for adding live cover for wildlife.

Only thing we ever used sweet gum for was lathing on barns. We'd put it up green then put the tin on. When it dried then the nails wouldn't walk out of it like other lumber. They also use sweet gum a lot for cross ties.

Darryl Patton showed me you can use any part of it as a suppository.
    Patrick confirmed it too!

We made that swamp bed for the mosquito net Mike gave us at Patricks...damn thing weighed about 300 pounds when we finished it. All sweet gum.

I agree, I slept in this modified swamp bed and it was nice and springy.

Fire wall backing is also a good thing it is used for. Jeff had this in one of the first bum camp lean-to shelters. It won't burn green and since it is a hard wood, it takes a lot to burn when dry.
    ...and suppositories.

They also make good trees to throw knives into. At least I've heard that they do.

Bum camp wouldn't have even been possible without sweet gum, and we say it has no value!

Shelter and camp furniture in one. Perfect for hard/frozen, rocky ground. In the tropics we can pound posts in the ground, but not that easy in the Southeast.

I told Patrick before it has some uses more than just suppositories. We burned some in his woods last July. Good and dry, it smokes, but burns ok!

We never use it for firewood. It has to dry a long time before it will burn decent and the grain in it is so twisted anything less that a hydraulic wood splitter is a waste of time.

Yes sir, twisted nasty to work with. Patrick had a stack that had been drying for a while just to decently burn.

You and Patrick should really do one of the survival reality shows. Seriously. I watch these folks suffering and wonder why they just don't take a little time and build a decent shelter and some camp furniture.

You know those shows are so scripted and full of BS. Even "Try Before You Die" we worked on in Peru August 2008 with those guys had a script.

Patrick and I would goof off and make a fire, that's about it. And...talk about Predator!

I got an idea on camp furniture made for your environment thread I may do.
