I am planning on getting a set of Skinner Sights for my marlin 1984c. I handled a rifle with them installed and it is one of my favorite peep sights.
Yep, skinner sights here too, just screws in, very easy install on mine. Didn’t want anything bulky on a 44 trapper, aperture site is ideal for quick short range stuff.
I am on the fence on the peep sight. I have some experience having shot high power with a M-14 and used a shotgun with ghost ring extensively. I am NOT a fan on the shotgun. Do you feel the peep is slower to acquire than the existing sight. I know it would be better for precise work; but for me, I would need special glasses to be precise anyway. Skinner also makes a front sight. Are you fellows replacing the front. Some of my loads seem to shoot really high, and I know I would prefer a patridge that could be filed down.
I have four lever rifles, two have XS sights front and rear, the other two have XS front sights with a Williams and a Wild West Guns rear. The white line up the center of the XS front really helps my 59 year old eyes get on target. In my case peeps are faster than conventional sights. One of those rifles has a Scout Scope in QD rings and it’s the fastest on target. The Skinner sights I’ve seen in the flesh looked nice and the gent who makes them is active over on the Cast Boolit forum. He seems like a good fellow to do business with.
I hope all the rumors about Marlin quality have been dealt with. I just ordered a .45 Colt w octognal barrel!
I have a Henry Big Boy 'All Weather' in 44mag on hold for me right now. I think it will pair up with my Redhawk 44 nicely...
I'm betting you'll like it. Awesome caliber. I used to load for it out of the old Speer manual from the Thompson Center and Ruger Blackhawk only section. They are now loading it much hotter.
I was picked up for party hunting. In a nutshell I shot a deer for my brother while I didn’t have a tag. It’s legal in most places just not here. I think I explained it in this thread. Maybe not. Learned my lesson for sure. It was $1600 I didn’t want to cough up to the governor.
Has anyone gone through the accurizing process for their lever guns? When i researched it some time back it was a dizzying amount of work to do to the barrel, magazine tube and lever.
Sweet! Im glad folks still enjoy these guns. A marlin 336 was my first gun and ive not gotten over it. There is just something sooo cool about them. Someday ill go down the accuracy route but maybe with a new gun first.
I have always just cleaned a new lever gun then hied off to the range to see if it shot to Rick Spec. My theory is that centerfire levers should be able to cleanly take deer out to 100 yards. Where I hunt more is rarely required. Both my Winchester 94 and Marlin Guide Guns will shoot into 2” at 100 yards. My Marlin 94 in .44 shoots into 4” at 100, good nuff. If a gun doesn’t shoot to spec I’ll work with load development and check sights, stock or action bolts, and bore. So far in 45 years of shooting none of my levers has required heroic efforts to work for me.
