White vinegar then lots of deer blood and veggie chopping.
White vinegar then mustard followed by a light buffing with a scotchbrite pad then more white vinegar. It looks more gnarly now after cutting lots of different green vegetation.

You did an awesome job on those scales. I've been wanting to give my LS a makeover for a while now. Did you notice any difference in sheath retention after you filed your scales?

@Emac did those scales along with filing a vine pattern all along the tang, that LS was a gift from him. The sheath retention is still perfect. I later got a leather sheath made by one of his coworkers then bought a blade only LS and G10 scales from TKC to go with the stock sheath as a work user because I didn't wanna chance losing the modded LS.

Rigged it up for iwb carry by modding my own clip plate from a stock LS/5/6 clip plate.

I did the Junglas scales, my son conned me into trading them to him for his dark earth Junglas and I haven't gotten around to filing the plain stock ones yet.

My 5 after I sanded the coating off, squared the spine, polished it then soaked in white vinegar.

It's gotten pretty gnarly after beating it though some well seasoned crabapple wood.

How long do you guys leave the mustard on the blade for?

Hey Bill, I did a knife with yellow mustard once (I couldn't bear to waste my bottle of the brown stuff). It was a Case XX Sodbuster with their CV steel. I believe I left it on for longer than what it says to do in this link (about 45 minutes, only because I lost track of time). I do remember referring to this page for reference. My patina did have a blue hue to it like the guy who wrote this shows. I have gotten into the habit of checking my blades intermittently when doing patinas because steel "A" may respond differently than steel "B" to the same exact oxidizing agent. Hope this helps. I've had just enough chemistry lessons in my time to be dangerous but not enough to really know what I'm doing!

Did a 30 minute warm Apple cider vinegar followed by 4 hour stuck in a grapefruit. Cleaned with soap and water then oiled. Think it turned out pretty good. 20180108_211113.jpg 20180113_124441.jpg

Thanks! My son ended up getting those Junglas scales I modded. My modding ability doesn't hold a candle to @Emac though.

I can’t even remember my children’s names half of the time, much less keep up with forum names here and there.

    What is Emac’s other name?

No worries man, it's my fault for getting banned. I was allowed back in by Jeff, but my old accounts as @JMJ and @Zeitgeist couldn't be reactivated.

It's still @Emac, he's just not around much. New job and 3 kids at home eat all his time.

Your knife making is top notch man, I've enjoyed seeing your work!

I hear ya, LMAO! I nearly spit my drink across the living room when I read this. My wife wants another kid. The one we've got has already aged me harder and faster than anything in my entire life.

Oh damn! You're making me nervous now lmao! I've got a son that's 17 from a very brief first marriage and now my wife of 11.5 years will be having a c-section for our daughter tomorrow.

    O. K. Thread hijacked.

Maybe I'll put this somewhere else tomorrow.

Sheeit just happens... I read to my boy every night before bed for years. One day he just told me he was tired and that was it. If I had only known... it was the last, never again.

With my girl... carried her everywhere. She would say, "uppy" and I would scoop her up in my arms. I can't even tell you exactly when, but one day... too soon, it was the last. Had I only known... :(

    Congrats! Hope everything goes well.
Not a thread highjack...your kids just got their patina on.
This last deer season my son, now 16, says “ I need a pair of hunting boots. My old ones don’t fit. I don’t need expensive ones, I only have one season left to hunt before I go to college.”
I savored very hunt we had this year.
