Nice pics... been there a few times and on the old Durango Silverton .... great ride and scenery. Fond memories of the Durango area. Last time we were there we stayed at the Strater and had a great time. The zip lining just off the train ride is highly recommended ... Soaring Tree Top Adventures ...

 

Can't comment on a prison cell as I've never been in one or incarcerated ... The Strater has different sized rooms probably none of which are large by todays standard. Especially considering the age of the hotel ... the wife liked it so that was good enough for me ...

Might want to check out Ouray in the winter. They do that climbing stuff you'all are into but up a frozen waterfall.

I love that area.

 

I grew up in this area, went to high school in Montrose and my family lives in Durango now

 

I went to Durango last fall. Had a great time. Got tanked at the saloon at the strater.

Drove to silverton and went up into the mountains.

 

It's incredible country and there's so much of it you couldn't see it all in a lifetime. We used to break trail on a lot of those passes in the spring, bunch of stupid kids, winches, shovels, jacks and nothing better to do

 

I went up to where the old gold mines are. Absolutely incredible how they built all of the cable towers that hauled the ore and manpower up and down the mountains.

I loved the silverton area. I could disappear back there forever.

 

Planning a trip to this part of country in May. Taking my family, so it will only involve light hiking and what is near a road.
Taking suggestions for things to do/see/not miss.

Ten four!

We drove to Silverton from Durango. It was a cool drive. Lots of history up in these hills.



Silverton was fun. Its like an old gold rush high mountain town. Old saloons and shops everywhere. Dusty road through the middle of it. I hear the winters are so severe there, that not everyone stays there during the winter. My kind of place.


The history here is staggering. Old mines and minings buildings everywhere. Abandoned. I would love to be able to get into those place and snoop around a bit. Next time.



Some of the ore buckets that they used to take tailings/rocks and sometimes workers from mine sites on top of the mountain to the ground..Or in the case of workers, they used to ride up to the mine in these things. SO i'm told. The giant support structures that hold up these cables are huge...and all over the mountain ranges. It would have been serious work to build those back in the day!!

I want to go back to Silverton when I have more time to hike and explore. The elevation didn't bother me at all..I thought the area was extremely intriguing. I'll be back one day.

 

There are lots of old mines miles back in on some of these creeks and mountains. Some of them still have ore carts and other heavy equipment that makes you shake your head and wonder how they ever got it in there. When I was in high school one of the trips I liked was up the Cimmaron drainage a climb of Uncompaghre peak and then over to lake city. Amazing scenery and tons of wildlife

 

That's a great trip, Durango to Silverton. Have lunch in Silverton. For a few dollars more you can take the bus back to Durango if you are in a hurry or cannot suffer the trip back.
One of the "closed" cars (windows open) has narrators dressed in character and talk about the history of the area. Again, for a few dollars more.
Durango is a fairly large "city" now. Strip malls and all. There is a nice walking biking path through part of town along the River. Watched a fly fisherman pull some nice trout right in town. ]
You can get all the weed you want.
