Not my entry, but a picture of a few shelters I have built to get everyone jacked up!

Thanks ASH for putting this contest on. Reminds me of the old days when there was a contest like this every week when the ESEE forum was first built.

Those are some good looking shelters. I have always enjoyed building shelters ever since I was a kid just stacking sticks.

@Se7eN takes it to a whole nuther level......his shelters are pretty much what most hunters, trappers and survivalists build in northern BC, Yukon, Alberta etc.

Thanks buddy. I try! Shelters have to work...You can build them out of a book all you want, but you and I both know that until you get out there and build them yourself, you wont know what works best in your natural environment.

My official response to this contest.

Task - Construct survival shelter for contest entry.
Goals - Shelter must be realistic, quick and simple to construct yet effective.
Rules - Only cordage can be used for man made materials.
Tools used - Gransfors Bruks Double Bit Felling Axe, ESEE 6
    Exceptions - NO CORDAGE USED
    Weather - Clear with some clouds, -26C + wind chill factor - 32 C
Time to complete - 1 hour and 52 minutes.

I picked a site that was out of the wind and had plenty of materials close by. If I found myself up sh*t creek without a paddle and needed to build a shelter to stay warm for the night in these temperatures, this would be the shelter I would build.

Criteria - Small lean to, raised bed, spruce bow thatching, spruce bow insulation on bed, leaves underneath bed to protect from cold radiant heat from the ground. Designed to be used with a long log fire for warmth. Based off of super shelter. If man made materials were permitted, space blankets would be used on the inside of the lean to roof and poly would have been hung over the opening of the shelter for the convection effect when used with a long log fire.

    Picture 1 - The site.

    Progress 1.

    7-35.JPG

Progress 2. Raised bed. Poles installed lengthwise to provide suspension/comfort.

    7-34.JPG

Progress 3. - No cordage used for horizontal support beam.

    7-32.JPG 7-31.JPG

Progress 4. I stuffed leaves and branches underneath the bed to limit the amount of cold radiating from the ground tot he bed.

    7-30.JPG

Progress 5. Spruce bow thatching. Don't be stingy with the thatching. The more you put on the roof and bed, the warmer you will be.

    7-29.JPG

Progress 6. - Completion - Additional thatching was added to eliminate any daylight. The side of the shelter were also enclosed to prevent unwanted drafts.

Things to note/WARNING - This is a realistic and effective WINTER shelter when used with a long log fire. Unless you have outstanding sleeping gear, you will freeze your ass off in sub -20 temperatures in this shelter without the long log fire being used. Take your time thatching the roof. its worth it.

Remember, if building a shelter in a real life survival scenario, allow yourself enough time to construct the shelter and gather enough firewood for the night. Remember, be efficient with your movements and efforts, because if you sweat in these temperatures and don't have additional gear, you will potentially be in big trouble.

I ain't give up yet. I'm on goat birthing duty tonight. And bunnies....must have been a damned orgy here. I've got two goats about to drop, and had 3 litters of bunnies with more hair pulling going on!

Don't be changing bets in midstream...

Backing out due to a death in the family. I'll keep an eye on the other entries though, perhaps once things settle I'll get out into the woods with the kiddos.
